Update on my daughter

My lucky daughter gets to go in for a colonoscopy. All her stool tests came back negative. So I am waiting for the scheduling nurse to give me a call and set one up. She is still having D but only sporadic bleeding (bright red blood).

What prep would you all suggest for a 16 year old with a sensitive stomach? I don't want to see her do a prep that is just going to make her vomit.

I think it's good she's be getting a diagnosis through colonoscopy, this way you'll know for sure and can move forward.

And I hope you'll get good results - that's it's just hemmies. :-)

As far as prep, I'm really not familiar with them, so I cannot chime in on that.

Let us know when the colonoscopy is. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed.

((hugs)) Sherry. I have no advice on the prep. I did GoLytely for my first and mixed each glass with lemonade mix (not sugar free, since I can't tolerate artificial sweetners) and tonight I'll be drinking MoviPrep. I don't have a sensitive stomach, though.

My son said the Ducolax Miralax/Gatorade prep was very tolerable, especially compared to the 1 gallon GoLytely prep he had done when he was 10.

My then 8 year old did the 2 day clear liquids with a 10 ounce bottle of Mag Citrate each day and tolerated it very well, other than missing solid food by the second day!

Thanks all....I will ask about the Ducolax/Miralax prep for her. I told my daughter that she will not be able to eat the day before the scope, just clear liquids and she about freaked! She loves her food :)

What about the Pico Salex? I hear that's a good process as well...never looked into it.

The GoLytely is still the best from my opinion, and she can have a light breakfast the day she starts the prep. This is the only one without flavouring added into the mix that I know of.

My strong opinion based on experience, if she's sensitive, the liquid meals the day before will be more difficult and have her feeling crappier.

I'm glad she's getting her scope.

oh, that's a change...lol.  You could call your pharmacy and see if they can get it in...?

No, I don't think I've ever done the gallon preps. I've done Phososoda(?) - several times, Osmoprep and Suprep over the years.

dolcalax and miralax was definately easiest for me to handle, particularly taste wise... my only issue was that i was very impacted so it took a long time and didn't clean me out all the way, but if she's having D, that shouldn't be an issue. also, are they putting her out? that was the only way i could do the tests.

Oh heck yeppers I will have her knocked out! :) I wouldn't have it any other way for my daughter because I was semi-awake for my first one and never ever again will I go thru that let alone put my daughter thru that. I remember my first one and they had to keep giving me more and more pain meds (I metabolize them way too fast) and unfortunately my daughter is exactly like me when it comes to metabolizing things.

where she's so young she might react like i do when waking up. tell her ahead of time that she may feel like she has to poop, but that it's just gas and she won't be able to get out of bed right away. know that teenagers are stubborn and she will want to get out of the hospital as soon as possible so she'll tell you she feels fine even when she doesn't (i passed out on my way out of the hospital the first time b/c i wanted to go home too soon and i said i felt better than i did). know that she may wake up crying even if you have good news for her and that she may get frightened of the results right before she goes under, particularly if she has someone in a bed next to her that's nervous. i've watched my mother be there with me and i know it's stressful, but knowing these things in advance can be helpful. wish her luck for me and if she needs to talk, i had my first scope in the 6th grade, so i can definitely be helpful to her.

Ducolax Miralax/Gatorade prep is very tolerable - I've tried four different preps and this is def. the best, might be good for your daughter b/c she gets to drink gatorade too - the miralax has no flavor - just makes the gatorade taste a bit thick.

The other three I tried [which I DON'T recommend} are osmo-prep, fleet phoso-soda and movie-prep - miralax/ducolax was best - also - I was the same age as your daughter when I had my first colonoscopy, don't worry I'm sure she'll do great! Good luck.

I recommend getting broth - she can drink that all day and it's pretty filling - I usually call the local Chinese food delivery and get two gallons of just broth - that and liquids really help - I would do a very light breakfast the day before if allowed b/c if she's not all cleared out, the doctor might have to repeat the test and NOBODY wants that!

The doctor's office called and her scope is scheduled for next Tuesday, the 25th. They are sending instructions for the Miralax prep.

I plan on getting her broth, popsicles and lemon Italian ice.

Good luck, my son's test is Thursday. I have not even looked at the instructions yet but thanks for the reminder to pick up some broth and stuff.

Sherry, I made turkey broth for my prep. My grocery store sells packages of turkey wings for really cheap, so I threw them in a pot with some water, celery, onion, salt, and pepper and boiled it for a good long while. It was a LOT yummier than store bought broth!

I hope she has a hemmorhoid!

I haven't liked either of the preps I've tried. I did the dulcolax/miralax prep once and the visicol pill prep the 2nd time. The pill prep worked better for me, d/m made me throw up.

i was never allowed have any liquids at all during the prep. you might want to check and make sure that they're okay with that.

I'm 99.9% positive clear liquids will be allowed. I've had so many of them over the years that I know the tricks of the trade.

I can't imagine how clear liquids wouldn't be allowed...it seems like you'd be on the path to severe dehydration otherwise.

I agree, the miralax prep is the best. I did the phosphosoda at 15 and I thought I was going to die. I did mag cit after that and it was eh but definitely the miralax is the smoothest. It's a good thing that she's being knocked out. They tend to do that for kids/teens anyways.

Yes, restricting all liquids would just dehydrate you. I've always been told any liquids but red/purple. Make sure to tell her to choose a flavor of gatorade she doesn't like cuz she won't like it again after that!
