Did you have a lot of blood when first diagnosed?

I"m wondering if its the same for everyone. Does everyone pass a lot of blood when they are first diagnosed. I mean whats a lot? A toilet bowl full or bright red on toilet paper? I've had some blood in Mucus but I am also not diagnosed with UC told I have IBS.

I also do not have a lot of pain mostly pain from gas.
I cant seem to get the dr's to listen to me so I'll figure things out on my own.

When I first started having symptoms, there was a small amount of blood. I was young and I ignored the symptoms for a while. Then it got really bad (a lot of blood-bright red toilet bowl full) so I couldn't ignore it anymore and was diagnosed. My UC turned very severe pretty quickly. Any bleeding I consider a lot because you can become very anemic.

Mine was the same as Marianne's. I had some minor bleeding but had increasing D. I waited too long and the bleeding, D and pain picked up. I couldn't ignore it any longer either.

Fortunately, I did not. In fact even with 10+ years of UC I have had very little bleeding and mostly bright red on toilet paper.

It can take a long time to get a diagnosis as there is no IBD test, it's all about symptoms. When I was first diagnosed I had blood streaks on the bowel movement. No other symptoms. My diagnosis was proctitis. Several years later my symptoms changed and after a colonoscopy I was diagnosed with left sided UC.

Have you seen a GI? Have you had a colonoscopy?

I waited 2 months after noticing just blood on tissue and constant regular bowel movements to get a colonoscopy. By diagnosis, that time I was diagnosed pretty severe and in alot of pain seeing alot of blood in the toilet. But since changing diet, adding prednisone, etc I've seen major improvements. Infact this is the third day I havent seen any blood and only one to two (almost) regular bowel movements a day! Weaning on prednisone, on asacol and lots of other natural things to help... we can only hope!!

I went from explosive diarrhea to explosive bloody diarrhea. Probably around 4 times a day that acelerated to 20 by the time I was diagnosed.

I obviously had UC for a few years before...my doc didn't find my symptoms serious...even the extreme weight loss and eventual bloody diarrhea. At least she sent me passed me off to the GI I still have who did all the pertinent tests to rule out other possibilities before diagnosing me with UC.

The meds were extremely helpful...but they took a while to fully kick in and severely improve my symptoms.

No I just had mucous in the beginning. Same thing now for my son.

     I started with just mucus in the stool.  After a week of that, I saw blood streaks and then all Hell broke loose, diarrhea, cramping, terrible urgency.  I would feel like I had to keep going even though nothing was coming out.  I lost 15 lbs in three weeks, a temp of 102 and had to be hospitalized.   This was in 1998.  I had ulcerative proctitis which is very difficult to treat.  Ran the gamut of meds and had a total colectomy with end ileostomy last year.

I had a lot of blood when I was first diagnosed years and years ago. I have had virtually no bleeding since then, with the exception of right after a colonoscopy because of the biopsies they take.

I have never had blood. Which I find odd but just alot of mucus and D.

I very rarely have noticeable blood when I go while flaring... however I must have been bleeding because I was very anemic during my last flare.

Flaring? what does that feel like?? I only have blood once in a while. streaks in mucus occasionally I have been anemic for 15+ years. I've had loose stools for even longer off and on mostly mostly on. The pain is from the severe gas I get. I really don't have other pain. I would like to know what it feels like from others when they flare. My aunt has UC but that's the only family member I know of with it.
I've also become Lactose intolerant. I am so sick of all this gas and bloating and living in the bathroom. I just had new bloodwork about 4 weeks ago my Hemoglobin was only 6.8 they wanted to send me for Iron infusions but I'm taking a liquid iron with better absorption instead. My problem is I do not absorb anything I cannot gain weight like a normal person. This is seriously not normal, does everyone have pain with UC? what foods bother you the most?

It sort of sounds to me like you've never really been in remission. I'm in remission and have zero symptoms. What all meds are you on right now?

Hi there I have never had much bleeding, more muscus and for me the severe urgency and D resolved. I still have ot go to the bathroom a lot but it is feeling like I have not finished and I often get pain the gut that doesn't stay for long.
I haven't really noticed particular foods being a problem but I have never had much tolerance for hot and spicy I find restaurants problematic just the richness I think. I can't lose weight and am tired tired tired. I think it really varies a lot for people

You should have a colonoscopy done ASAP. That's how UC or IBD is diagnosed. Until then you won't know what your real diagnosis is and can't get the meds you might need. UC is diagnosed based on what they see or by biopsy. IBS is what they call it with no further information or not seeing any physical indications.

Pain can be either IBS or IBD, not every UC'er has pain, I don't except in cramping sometimes.

Since you're anemic you might be passing blood in your stool that is not visible (occult). Please get a c-scope and find out what's happening. However make sure you have an insurance plan first, after getting a UC diagnosis it becomes more difficult to get insurance and/or at a reasonable cost. Insurance, even if it doesn't cover the cost of your meds, brings the cost of the meds down a lot.
