I am almost 100% certain my ulcerative colitis was caused by tetracycline antibiotics. I would like to preface this with the fact that I am a pharmacist. But I had taken doxycycline for many years for my acne. I didn't start to experience symptoms until about
3 to 4 years later. I first thought it was C. diff because I work in a hospital but slowly realized it might be the antibiotics so I stopped taking them and the symptoms went away but I still had a colonoscopy about
a month later that came back fairly normal so I wasn't too scared and I started my antibiotics again but the symptoms came back, much more mild though so it didn't bother me. A year later after whirlwind of stressful events in my life my symptoms became much worse so again I went in for another colonoscopy. This time, the doctor couldn't even finnish the scope because he was too afraid he would puncture my colon as it was very friable. He told me it was ulcerative colitis. I immediately stopped the antibiotics and have been on steroids since with no signs or symptoms. I go in for another colonoscopy in a week and am hoping the news is much better this time around. NO MORE ANTIBIOTICS! Its just not worth it.
