Hi. I know that Shire Pharma., the company for Lialda is very interested in promoting their "patient assistance" program and have been very active in changing their advertising to show consumers and potential consumers of Lialda and other drugs they manufactuer for UC that they "care".      I was wondering how many of you taking Lialda suffer from just ulcerative proctitis and not pancolitis.    I asked my GI doctor about it since the Colazal seems to be doing nothing and neither is the 6MP. He said Lialda does the same thing as Asacol and treats the colitis further up in the colon and that the Colazal works better down below.  I am also on cort enemas and canasa.

I was on sulfasalazine ("azulphidine") for the first, oh, 5 years or so, then my doc switched me to Asacol, which is basically the same stuff but without the sulfa component.

And asacol is expensive, too. Because there's no generic, etc., my insurance considers it "top tier." I can get 3 months' worth at a time through the mail-order pharmacy; it's $150 for the three months' worth.
So, for my son and me, I pay $300 every three months......

But I agree with above - have your doc write the prescription for 4 pills a day of Lialda (that's the amount I'd be taking if I switched to it, my GI told me) and make your script last twice as long!

My son is on 8 Asacol a day, but his GI writes the script for 9/day so we always have a stash of extra pills.

Lakegirl. 18 years ago my first Med was azulphadine for quite a few years then went to Asacol and Then Asacol HD. My Dr. Just put me on Lialda 4 pills a day. I started taking on Saturday and by Tuesday I had such severe abdominal and lower back pain, headaches, dizziness it was horrible. I took myself off Lialda and went back on the Asacol HD. It's been 2 days and feel much better. Seeing Dr. Tomorrow to discuss my condition further. I wish/hope that Lialda would work for me. Wish me luck.
