Hi,I have been reading this forum for a while which has been helpful but also fearful of what I read sometimes,the suffering.Short story about me.I was diagnosed with proctitis almost 8 years ago through a sig-scope after couple of months of heavy bleeding.Prescribed salofalk supp. which worked well for me over the years.This February had another sig-scope,thought it was time to check ,started flaring appr. 10 days before scope do to taking Advil(Advil always makes me bleed but I had a Root canal ,was in so much pain that I was alternating Advil and Tylenol,also an antibiotic.)Had my scope,Doctor told me my supp. will not be any good to me since my proctitis spread 50cm now. Was given Mezavant and 4g salofalk enema.Took that, next day had constant dierreah ,day and night ,stopped taking the drugs ,these symptoms continued for 3 days.Called the Doctor ,said I had to take it.Took it again same thing happened,constantly going to the bathroom ,day and night,ended up losing 8 lbs.in a week and had to go to the hospital for dehydration,again lasted exactly 3 days after stopping the drugs.Took a little break,went back to the Doctor a week later.Prescribed Asacol 3200g daily,took that one day woke up next morning same thing but this time with fever,again exactly 3 days before back to normal.My only symptom has always been bleeding never dearreah,biopsy said moderate ulcerative colitis .Very confused! thank you for any opinion

Mezavant is a brand name for mesalamine, and I believer Salofalk also is mesalamine. It's a very good drug, and usually the first tried for UC. But a significant number of people don't tolerate it, and it can cause increased symptom in them. In this case, usually a different drug is used. In my case, I was put on Colazal (balsalazide), which helped control the symptoms to a degree and never made them worse. Others use sulfasalazine, which is an older drug but helpful for some people.

Clearly your body doesn't tolerate mesalamine, and you shouldn't be taking it. Talk this over with your doctor. If he or she isn't willing to try a different drug to help you, consider changing doctors or at least getting a second opinion. There are more options available, and taking something that makes you worse doesn't make sense at all.

Welcome zdenka. I'm new today as well. I never did well with Asacol either. My opinion: The diarhea and fever are your bodies immune response to something it doesn't like. Could be UC, the new meds, infection, or even a food allergy. I think diet plays a huge role in controlling UC.

Thank you,I am not on any medication other than the supp.,Went to see another gi,told me she didn't know what to do with me,bacause I feel well and the only symptom I  have is bleeding,and not very much,never as much when first diagnosed 8 years ago.

I have been following the scdiet for almost six months,not sure if that is helping since I am having very small amount of blood(drop or two on my once per day stool)also take l-glutamine and fish oil daily

Welcome to the UC Forum, but sorry you feel bad. It sounds like your inflammation has spread up the descending colon-- since you mention 50 cm. You need oral medication to treat that; the supps only reach as far as the rectum. Have you looked at CCFA Website yet? You may find some helpful info there RE meds & gastroenterologists, too, if you're in the U.S. Best wishes for you to find the treatment you need. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
