Finally gonna try FT a home, but have a question...

Hey Guys, I have been wanting to try FT for a while and I am going to finally do it Tues.(if my donor makes a deposit) This is probably a stupid question but when mixing the solution at home... Do you make your own saline solution with salt and distilled water, or do you buy it? The saline solution I have seen at the store is not just sodium chloride, it has other stuff in it. Suggestions?

I didn't want to mess around with making saline so I bought it. I asked a pharmacist for straight saline with no preservatives. There were only a couple of choices. I bought a saline wound wash, it comes in a can. It's kind of expensive but I found the cheapest to be Kroger brand in the grocery store. The can is only 8 or 9 ounces so it'll only last a couple times. But it's convenient. Good luck and let us know how ft works for you.

I'm curious about why to use a saline enema, isn't a saline enema the type used as a laxative whereas you really want to make a "retention enema" using fecal bacteria. Why wouldn't you use distilled water instead to do the mixture?

When I last used a saline enema my bowel expelled as much as possible in a short time. This could be useful in prepping before inserting the fecal enema so that the FT had an open field IOW.

I have the home infusion protocol and it said normal saline..So I was just gonna follow it..not sure why saline..It would be much easier to use distilled water. Have checked a few of the pharmacies and was told I would need an RX for sterile saline. So my plan was to  check grocery stores

And I just found out my Donor has to go out of town for 4 days next week!!! And then we go out of town for Thanksgiving on the week aften that. I am never going to get this done:( I was already for the week except for the saline solution.

This looks like my last chance before remicade/humira or surgery..

The saline enemas have more than saline in them. They contain another ingredient that causes the colon to expel its contents. It's not the saline that causes that reaction. Saline is a neutral ingredient that is the least irritating to the colon (and anywhere in the body for that matter). That is why it is recommended for ft. Distilled water can be used but it will draw electrolytes from the body and that is not desirable. So that's why saline is recommended. I used saline when mixing my ft and I was able to retain the enemas overnight.

Ask the pharmacist to show you what's on the shelf. There is a sterile saline only wound wash that comes in a can. You don't need a script for it. Saline grows bacteria pretty quickly when exposed to air so that's why there aren't many choices that don't have preservatives. And you wouldn't want a big bag of it because it doesn't keep that long.

The type of saline is the same. It's used as a base ingredient and mixed with different things depending on the purpose. For ft the donor poop is too thick to implant so it needs to be mixed with something. For laxative enemas saline is spiked with an ingredient that causes the laxative effect. But the saline is the same. It's the same type of saline that's used for contact lens solutions, to hydrate people intravenously, etc.
