prednisone making things worse?

I[ve been in a bad flare and my MD prescribed 40 mgs of prednisone. I'm starting to think it is making things much worse with constant bloating, gas. I think I'm going to cut way back and see what happens. I've been on this for about 10 days and am feeling a bit crazed as well!

The crazy feeling is side effect that some get with the pred. Tapering must be done slowly or you will get more side effects which could include alot of pain or adrenal failure. Do you take a probiotic? It can help with the bloating and gas.

What meds were you on before being prescribed the pred?

I agree with sherbear, be very careful tapering, please consult with your GI before doing so.

I think a lot of the side effects you mention are normal prednisone side effects.

Were you in a severe flare up where you were constantly going to the bathroom and having pain, D and urgency?
Has prednisone helped with those symptom?
Have you ever been on prednisone before?

it takes me up to 2 weeks on 40 mgs to get under control usually, so you might want to wait before you start tapering, and add a rectal med.

pred. definitely didn't help me at all. it made EVERYTHING so much worse. regardless, you should probably just taper down to get off of it before it screws your body up even more.

I've been on cort enemas and suppositories because I'm allergic to mesalamine. I cut back my dosage to 20mgs and feel much better. I'm supposed to begin cutting back beginning tomorrow anyway.

prednisone is so helpful with colitis while it wreaks havoc on the rest of your body. i hate going on it. maybe ask your GI about entocort. its a steroid designed for the GI tract but its not as strong. see what he/she says.

correct me if im wrong, but doesnt entocort only really work in the small intestine, and more for chrons' patients....my doc keeps pushing this too, but i thought from what i have read that it doesnt really do much for UC
