The past few days ive been having a lot of pain in my tailbone. Its only felt when getting up, sitting or trying to hold in gas or a bowel. It doesnt hurt as bad if i put pressure on it with my fingers but i can feel pain when i do that. It just started randomly. No injury, lifting or anything like that. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I searched this pain and came up with a condition called "coccyx injury" where the bones at the end(tail) get inflamed or broke. Wondering if my flare is causing the pain, it never has before with any flare. Going to make an appt. for xrays but wanted to see if anyone had any insight. It goes away by its self unless severe then you have to have surgery. Really hope im not dealing with this injury on top of my uc issues. :(

How long have been taking Asacol? I had that exact tailbone pain when I was taking Asacol. Never had it before... never had it since as soon as I went off the med.

Rectal pain, maybe from flaring?

i have that too...i have had it over the years since i had uc. when i mentioned it to my ex-doctor, he said "well, you don't have as much padding there anymore" because i'd lost weight. i KNOW that is not why i have the pain. what a stupid answer. i have never been able to figure it out, but it comes and goes.
i am not currently taking asacol. however i am using rowasa. maybe it could be mesalamine related. hmmm...

serenity & kate22: I've been on asacol a year now. Before that I was off for about a year. I thought maybe it was because I just got off prednisone. I have been using rectal meds more than ever in the past 2 months. I hope it goes away because I sit for a living (tattooer) :(

journey: It's not really in my rectum, I have no pain taking enemas/suppositories.

However, I do really feel the pain when i'm having a bowel & my rectum does the "cut off" feeling (i don't really know how to classify this lol)

I have Sacroiilitis. This is pain and inflammation in the Sacroiliac joint - the joint that holds your hips in alignment with your spine. The pain sometimes just affects my tailbone....makes me miserable! This is something that you might want to look into as well. I am not sure what caused mine.

I had coccyx pain very briefly a couple of months ago. It only lasted a couple of days. It was a very strange feeling because it didn't feel like it was coming from my colon at all - it really felt like the pain was just radiating from the bone. I was on prednisone at the time (I was either in the process of increasing or decreasing my dose...can't recall) so I suspected it was joint pain as a side effect of the pred. I don't take mesalamines so I can't really comment on whether it could be a side effect of that...

Regardless, hopefully yours will come and go as quickly as mine did!

Red: Oh i hope not. How old were you when diagnosed with sacro?

Sconnie: This is exactly what i'm feeling, what you described. God I hope it's just a weird pred taper side effect. I've never had a problem with mesalamine rectals or asacol ever.

I'm done with prednisone. If I get bad sick again, I guess it's time for remicade.

I have it too right now and thought it was weird but only notice it when I am sitting, mentioned it doc and got no comment. I am in a flare also and on 10 pred.

Well i was in a lot of pain last night but woke up today feeling a lot better. Its still a bit sore an the more i walk around i can feel it but hopefully its passing. It almost feels like spasms at certain times.

If it hurts to sit down, try using a donut. I works great for any type of tailbone pain. Also, ice can help as well. 15 minutes on, 15 off thru out the day.

I just woke up today with tailbone pain, too. Totally out of the blue, with no discernible reason for it. It really hurts with standing up or sitting down. confused I've had low back pain and mid-buttock pain before, but never tailbone pain. Very odd.

do you think it could be a cyst?? i had one one my tailbone when i was sick this year. i'm pretty sure it was from pushing too hard when i was going to the bathroom. it eventually went away after i got better.

I don't know. There's no swelling or redness or anything. Would I be able to tell if there's a cyst?

last year when I was on asacol- I would wake up every morning with severe lower back pain. I thought I needed a new bed. I was also loosing my hair. Once I stopped the asacol the back pain went away and my hair started coming in fuller. I love remicaide- its a life changer!

it's called a pilonidal cyst. mine was just a tender little bump that you can kind of get confused with your actual tailbone. mine was right above my butt crack. mine didn't break through the skin and wasn't red.

Pretty random that this topic is on the front page today. I woke up this morning and my tailbone was killing me. Still hurts now and it feel like its on the bone cuz I can feel around it and if I push on a certain area on the bone its very painful. Slightly painful to walk, standing up is particularly painful....was hoping I had bumped it somehow and it would heal in a day or two, but given this thread, I guess its somehow related to UC or the medication I'm on :(

I have had tailbone pain for the last 3 months, x rays and mri showed nothing. Physical Therapist stated it was due to me standing "sway back" and those muscles pulled directly on my tail bone muscles. I've been doing home exercises she gave me, at first they helped, but not so sure. For my job, I sit 8 hours a day. I just wish I could find something that could take it away completely. I am still seeing the therapist, so time will tell. ANy ideas - anybody????

I was going to mention possible ganglion cyst, they are common on the tailbone but I see banana covered it. I get ganglion cysts on my wrists, they can become very painful. and they only hurt when you move around or apply pressure on the area.

I woke up with this today too. Getting out of bed and walking was very tough.

I've had this pain before though, just hadn't had it in awhile so it was odd seeing this thread just now. Hopefully it fixes itself when I go to sleep tonight. Still hurts right now.

Before I was diagnosed, I was seeing a chiropractor because my back was all messed up too. Whenever I try tapering down on prednisone, along with most other symptoms of a flare occurring, my back also gets in a lot of pain. Usually it's lower back then other upper back musculature pains.

Doing back extensions at the gym help to keep my tailbone aligned. I also go to yoga classes on occasion which does wonders for my back, I haven't been in a couple of weeks though due to being busy. I think I will probably do some at home tonight before I go to bed though.

Hi. I know it has been a long time since anyone has responded to this. I am 26 year old female. I have not fallen, or done anything that could injure my tailbone in anyway. My doctor has not given me any imaging and the pain of my tailbone went away for about a week, now it is back. It started about a month ago. I have hemorrhoids off and on and I am wondering if you think a hemorrhoid can cause tailbone pain? I am so scared it is cancer. sad What was the outcome on all of you pain?

I had tailbone pain for months and it turned out that I have spondyloarthritis, and so it is worth seeing a rheumatologist.
