Hi everyone!
Quick question: I went to the dentist today and the anesthesia is about
to stop its effect, which means that I will be in pain soon (I'm already having some pain in my affected molar). I told her about
my UC, so she prescribed MELOXICAM as a painkiller. She said it shouldn't do any harm to my colon, but now I looked it up and I found out that Meloxicam is an NSAID, and as far as I remember, we're supposed to avoid NSAIDs like Ibuprofen because they cause bleeding and my exhacerbate symptoms and even throw me into a flare.
Is that true? Should I avoid Meloxicam and take something else (e.g., Acetaminophen/Paracetamol)? Are there any strong painkillers that are gentle to the colon? I've been in about
95% remission for about
3 weeks now and I don't want to take anything that may bring back any symptoms.
Thanks!

Hi elbarck!
I finally asked my GI about
it, and he told me I should avoid it; recommended non-NSAID painkillers (paracetamol); if that didn't work then he said I should try Lysine Clonixinate, which is an NSAID but should be more gentle than Meloxicam. If that didn't work, then I shoudl try Tramadol, and then, if none of them provided relief, then I should try Meloxicam. I don't remember the dosage or any other details, but I guess the bottom line was: try to avoid it.
I guess how we respond to that may be correlated to the current status of the disease (i.e., remission, flare, etc) and if you have a history of reacting badly to NSAIDs. I think I'd never take it because I think taking too much ibuprofen prior to my first flare was one of the triggers for my UC / Chron's, so I'm not a big fan of NSAIDs...
I hope this helps! BTW was your doctor a GI?

@ OP,
I have never used Meloxicam so can't give you any suggestion (as I am one of those who gets bleeding within hours of Ibuprofen or Naproxen) but I have been prescribed Nabumetone which supposedly have less GI side effects.
Lysine Clonixinate that you mentioned, I don't seem to find any brand, do you know any brands?

I used meloxicam/mobic/metacam (it has a few names) and within a week it made my skin very thin and I bled super easy which was unusual for me and about
10 days in I went into a mega-flare up like I have never experienced before which caused me to go to the GI and learn that I have UC. I think I had it for a while before this I just didn't know until this experience.

I really appreciate your clear response, I took your advice and have not taken it & won't do it.... Despite my Orthopedic doctor knows I've UC & I remembered him too while writing down meloxicam but he said it's tolerated if I took Napizol....
Do you know any other Anti Inflammatory medicine we're tolerated to....
Yours,
Mohamed
