Colonoscopy tomorrow... need advice

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy tomorrow at 12:30 pm. The doctor put me on 64 oz. of miralax, four ducolax pills and then magnesium citrate. I couldn't drink all of the citrate because it was making me gag. I was able to drink most of the miralax before i started to get very nauseous and sick. I;ve been able to go to the bathroom, but don't feel completely empty. I called the doctor a few hours ago and he said the citrate is the only thing that will help. I asked him about the fleet enemas and he stated that it will not clean me out. I am so uncomfortable and in pain right now where I have the colitis flares in my large intestine by the tranverse colon. After several bm and d, all that is coming out is mucous and shreds of bm. Any advice???

You poor thing Heather. I had a bad experience with Dulcolax and miralax. What happened was, the miralax worked but the dulcolax didn't do anything until I had already emptied out. This is what I think happened anyway. I ended up getting very nauseous and threw up. I hope you're emptied by the morning but it doesn't sound like you're confident that you're cleaned out. If I were in your shoes, I'd be very nervous about taking anything else. I agree that fleets won't help too much, they only clean out the lower part I think. If you took the dulcolax and drank all of the miralax, I would think you should be cleaned out. I hope somoene has more info. Miralax/Dulcolax is a common method, I've never heard of needing anyhting else with that combo.

Thanks and yeah I wasn't able to drink the whole container of miralax. I had maybe two cups left before I became sick. I guess time will tell! :)

What are you mixing the miralax with? I mixed mine with gatorade and the miralax didn't seem to alter the taste of the gatorade at all so it actually tasted pretty good! Once I got toward the end of the 64oz I started to get a little nauseated just due to the sugar overload from the gatorade and the sheer amount of liquid ingested in such a short time but nevertheless I still found it to be my easiest prep so far.

Obviously everybody reacts differently but If you aren't mixing the miralax with a gatorade-like beverage I would definitely give it a try! Hopefully you have someone who could run to the store for you! Just make sure you don't drink anything red or purple because the dyes can color your colon and make it look bloody on the scope.

I had a similar experience on my 2nd colonoscopy.

The drug combo you add to the water will make you very nauseous, to be honest I felt like puking at the same time as I was flushing my system out. Just like Sconnie suggested I would add a ton of gatorade mix to it. It really helps!

There are 10 steps to flushing your system out: (yes I'm going to be graphical)
1. Uhhh this stuff is gross.. better add more flavoring.
2. Thats better but man I'm feeling so bloated. How am I ever going to finish this stuff?
3. When is this stuff supposed to kick in? I better grab a laptop and a tv tray and watch the You tube video "Billy Connolly - Colonoscopy"
4. Haha that was funny stuff! oooh here it comes!
5. Its still going... and I still have so much left to drink. Nothing can possibly make this stuff taste good anymore..
6. Finally finished it! Soooo fulll!!
7. It burns soooo much!!
8. I'm ok now.. just lots of water coming out.
9. I think I'm done!
10. Yep there is nothing left. I'm done.

After my system was flushed I found that my gut was feeling really good. Not only did I feel good but I looked good. I lost 12lbs on the prep diet! (Yeah, i actually weighed myself)

I am sure by this time, your system is cleaned with the stuff you have already used. One thing, I wonder if the patients here are told not to eat anything (except transparent liquid diet) 24 hours before colonoscopy? Because if so, the Rx given to the OP should work out fine.

Colonoscopy seems to be 'glorified' in this country. When I was living in Sweden, almost every second visit my GI 'used to take a quick look inside' before advising me anything on meds, so I have got so used to it now that its pretty much routine to me. I haven't done it in 2 years now though, so its not very clear to me, why its so glorified (and expensive) here?

I will have to remember that gatorade trick only a yellow color right.  No orange, purple, red, blue, green stuff.  I have a colonoscopy in a couple of weeks.  I'm going to get my prescription filled today.  I'm not really looking forward to it.  although I haven't heard of to many getting excited about the colonoscopy.  I just want to be under enough so I don't wake up.  I hate that.  When I had all my wisdom teeth pulled I woke up briefly once relized where I was and what was going on and went right back to sleep, but still I seriously don't want to wake up during this process.  Wish me luck I go Jan 13 of course it's on Friday the 13th I didn't think of that at the time I scheduled it lol.  Any other tips on taking this junk let me know.  I hate taking medicine espically when it taste bad.  Like the baram stuff they have you drink before a CT scan or MRI.  I can't remember which one now, but they told me it tasted like pina coloda yea right.  I had to drink five cups of that couldn't hardly get through the fifth cup.

enjoy the med cocktail. fentanyl and midazolam is standard. you may not even remember. good luck.
