Trying to get over a flare and experiencing some serious lower back pain the past day or two. Even worse today now that I've gotten up and started walking around.  It's been so long since I've had a flare that I can't remember if the back pain was this bad? I remember having back pain, just don't remember it being quite so painful.

I'm on Pred, only for 3 days now, and went from about 6 BMs on Thursday to barely 1 so far today.  Guessing its not possible to get 'backed up' so quickly at least not to cause this back pain. I'm not bloated either.

Do others get this back pain and does it usually go away?

I get really bad back pain ever since getting UC when I'm standing in one place for too long (like not even that long...even just an hour and it kills me) or in some yoga poses. I don't think the pain would come from being backed up.

I don't know if being "backed up" will necessarily cause lower back pain but for me I know when my flare goes to the severe side, I get extreamly bad lower back pain, usually it's only when I'm on the toilet (30X a day) but I do find that standing for too long will irritate my lower back (I have to move around to loosen it up), that said, I exercise regularly and can't imagine how much worse it might be if I didn't.

Hope you find some relief soon, maybe try pilates/yoga to help with your lower back pains...and those forms of exercise are pretty easy on the gut (depending of course on the intensity of the many forms of yoga out there).

My last flair, which brought me to this forum, I had extreme lower back pain.  I couldn't even walk.

Flaring causes back pain for me, more severe than normal (which is daily, especially after waking up in the morning). To help ease my worst days, I take a back relief med (same as Tylenol back relief). normal days I can take Tylenol and it helps take the edge off.

REgarding being backed up...you're not, but as the inflammation heals you will have different symptoms.

Thanks everybody for the advice! I'll have to get back to yoga soon. I used to take it twice a week, plus cardio kickboxing and a bunch of other cardio classes. That was until I tore my groin muscle last fall and haven't been able to take the classes yet. Was just about to get back to them when this flare started! Flare is actually causing my groin pain to hurt a bit too - probably from all the bathroom visits over the past few weeks. Hoping to to get back to some classes and yoga in the next two weeks, once the flare calms down and I get my energy back.

I have taken PT for lower back pain in the past (qutie a few years ago). Was trying a few of those exercises this morning but they hurt so bad I could barely do them. I'll have to keep on them and hopefully that might ease the pain a bit. Strangely for me walking around seems to help - at first it hurts but starts to get things moving after a bit.

If things get really rough, tell your doctor about it and he can prescribe you Cyclobenzaprine, or Flexerol. Its a muscle relaxer, they will knock you out. Take it about an hour or two before bed and make sure you have not much to do the following morning. I am on the pred now and it helps me sleep as well as some minor back pain and tendonitis.

This helped me with my back pain that landed me in the hospital. Your Dr. will warn you of possible side effects... Be well!

I recently had a flare up of my UC and noticed a considerable amount of back pain as well.  I had not even realized there might be a connection but evidently there is.  I came to the forum and started a thread about backpain and got many of the same responses you did.  (You might want to look back at some older posts to find other references to back pain and UC).

For me, palliatives helped somewhat, also stretching.  I have also been diagnosed with osteopinia (the precursor to osteoporosis) and thought that was all it was.  But when the flare up subsided, so did my back pain.  In any case, I used the same treatments for this UC-Flare-Up-Back-Pain as I had for the Osteopinia-Back-Pain: cold packs, Tylenol, sometimes even Vicodin, or Flexoral, and bed rest.

59 y/o female

Dx w/ UC one year ago Dec. 2011

Balsalazide Disodium 750 MG 3 tabs 3X day

Low Residue Diet
