lifesover -- I learned on this forum that there's a difference between psyllium husk caps and psyllium seed powder. Now I take both, but I'm likely to stop the husks when in a flare. I had a cat who had chronic constipation because he refused to be brushed so his digestive system would get all clogged up with hair, but once we got him "going" again, I kept the constipation at bay with the contents of one psyllium husk cap stirred into his wet food every day.
On the other hand, the powder seems like it has been instrumental in bringing about formed stool for me. It's supposed to "bulk" up your stool and I'm finding that to be true.
As to the original question, as quincy said, I built up slowly over time but I currently take 3 caps in the am and 6 with my evening meal. I take a heaping tsp of psyllium seed powder in applesauce in the morning, as well.
