Great thread. I don't get pain like yours but when in flare I tend to avoid coffee but then 'waking up' takes terribly long time. :)

Second for me would be a chai tea. The trick about chai tea however is to get a great quality blend. Loose spices would be best. You put the spices into a pan, pour a bit of hot water to start up your mix then pour milk or vanilla soya milk until it boils a bit. Leave it to rest. I usually add star anise, cardamon and vanilla on top. You can do a liter at a time, put it in the fridge and reheat it. Very practical when you wake up at 5.30 am!
There is another option i believe is chicory. Seems like a similar texture and taste. It was suggested by a homeopath years ago. Now I don't know any particular brands but im sure natural food store have a few choices.
Go to an Indian grocery store and buy Brooke Bond's Red Label tea (loose, available as different size packs) or Taj Mahal tea, same packaging as Brooke Bond. DW uses Brooke Bond. In a small saucepan, add a tbspful of loose tea, cupful of water, bring it to boil. If you like spices, may be grate a bit of ginger or add a pinchful of cardamom powder and boil for min or two. Add suger. Add a little milk and turn of heat at first boil. Filter the mixture and chai tea is ready. (Actually this should be called as plain chai, which means tea.)
With chicory, some of the offee blend that you get in Indian stores contains 50% chicory, check the label. I don't like it (tastes a little bitter) but if thats what you want, you know where to get it.
