How come people with proc*** suffer from diarrhea? I thought that part of the colon only stores the feces.

That's a question I asked myself for a very long time after my initial diagnosis. It turned out, for me, that I had inflammation in the cecum and TI as well, but my first GI never knew that because he only used a sigmoidscope to find the proctitis.
Treating my IBD with Pentasa rather than Asacol resolved my diarrhea.
Here's something else I learned recently - I am intolerant of gluten. I don't have celiac disease, but after trying a gluten free diet for a few weeks it became clear that the remaining issues I was having with soft stool were due to gluten sensitivity and not bowel inflammation. Many people with inflammatory bowel disease are sensitive to gluten, independent of a celiac diagnosis.

They shouldn't, but they do probably because they've been improperly diagnosed as was the case with kasbern. Like so many others that participate here, I'm presently dealing with rectal bleeding although there is no diarrhea or cramping. Properly classified I suppose you'd call what I'm experiencing "proctitis" although I have a more general diagnosis of pancolitis stemming from my initial confrontation with this scourge. All of which tends to support the model of the disease that sees it beginning in the rectum and proceeding proximally and the healing process as developing in retrograde fashion with the rectum the last to heal.

I think one of the worse symptoms of UP is that horrible urgency and not being able to "hold it"..ugh. I used to have four portapots stationed throughout the house because I could never make it to the bathroom...this occurred every morning. Glad I was no longer working when I started with this disease. I feel so bad for you people who suffer and have to go to work.

I don't recall having D until my UC spread beyond the rectum. When I had proctitis, I had a lot of urgency and pressure, the feeling of having to go often, some blood but not D.

Depends how high in the rectum or above the inflammation is.
Proctitis can also include past the rectum and some docs call into the sigmoid...proctitis.
