Ok so i've been getting these awful stomach pains, mostly at night, for the past week. I didn't change anything in my diet or meds so i'm not really sure what could be causing it. At first I thought maybe it was gas but I kinda doubt it. I'm currently on Lialda, Rowasa generic nightly, VSL#3DS one in the AM, Humira weekly, and psyllium seed with my lunch. Other than the occasional stomach pain I don't have any other symptoms. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance!

Does it feel like it's in your actual stomach or your intestines?

Could be reflux....or spasming in general.....an anitspasmodic could help that before bedtime, as well as something like Zantac.

How long on the Rowasa nightly?

Sherry, If I had to guess I would say it feels like more in my stomach than my intestines. Its basically a strong dull pain right in the center of my abdomen. I could go all day and not feel anything but then wake up in the night and have it for hours, to the point where I cannot sleep at all. It seems to help if I sit upright and hurts the most when I'm laying down.

Quincy, I've been on rowasa nightly basically since I was diagnosed which was a little over a year ago. Just came off a flare I've been off of prednisone for about 3 weeks. I have some extra bentyl laying around, should I try that?

I would say for sure try the Bentyl....but now that you mentioned you've been on pred....I'd say reflux/acid imbalance in the stomach.

Please try Zantac...did your doc not have you on an acid reducer while you were on pred? If not, he should have....

i find that prilosec and zofran helped a lot with my stomach pains/cramps and vomitting.

I second the Zantac or Prilosec...at least for a few weeks to see if that is what is causing your issues. When was the last time you had your liver enzymes tested?

Sounds as though you need to revisit your doc with a list of questions.

For sure do the acid reducers. I used Zantac twice a day for a while....once in the morning a half hour before eating and at night.

Pain in the stomach can be from low in the rectum inflammation...more that messages are wonky from the rectum and the tendency to have more gas and constipation are associated. But....that doesn't seem to be the issue with you since it's only when you lie down.

So an update on this stomach pain. I guess it wound up being from a cdiff infection. I started getting pretty bad diarrhea and the pain got worse. Did a few days in the hospital and I tested positive for c-diff. My gi prescribed flagyl to treat it. Also, the cdiff might have caused a flare (# of BMs kept going up and up) so I also just started prednisone.

Just a question UC22: were you on any antibiotics in the previous 8 weeks before getting the stomach pains?
Or did you just get the C Diff out of the blue?

Conquer Uc - Thank you for the kind words. I wasn't on any antibiotics before getting the stomach pains. The only thing I can attribute to getting cdiff was that my girlfriend worked at a hospital. Scary stuff either way. I hope it goes away and doesn't come back but I'm not sure if I can do much more other than change my probiotic.

WOW, at least it's diagnosed! and you're being treated!
We can pick up c.diff anywyere....over and above what we carry in our guts normally. 

Definitely use a good probiotic..which one are you using?

I've been using VSL#3 DS since the summer. I'm thinking of adding or switching to align which has been recommended by my GI. Also, I am florastor right now since its the only thing flagyl won't wipe out. I read somewhere that florastor has been shown to reduce the re-occurrence of cdiff.

Sorry for the double post.. this is SORT of a side track. But I used topical Duac (acne med) for like 4 years before being diagnosed with UC. I was even using it up till the start of last summer. It has clindamycin which is a disaster for people with UC. I've always wondered if it influenced me getting UC and thought that my first major flare of symptoms was a cdiff infection caused by it but my tests always came back negative.

Hmm UC22 if it is topical as you say then i don't see how it could affect your gut flora, but if you use it in high enough amounts then sure it can get absorbed into your blood stream and reach your gut.

I would definitely recommend Saccharomyces Bouldarii to prevent the recurrence of C diff as i have read it can prevent the recurrence. I think they recommend up to x4 of 250mg capsules per day.

I hope the C diff never recurrs for you again.

hi 22 yo female,have you tried mercaptopurine (6 mp) I took high doses of prednisone and mesallamene,flagyl,anucort and the supository messalo. flares bad,lost 20 lbs.and lots of blood,became eniemic,could not hardly eat anything but liquid,full liquid diet, the 6mp made a big diff.hope things get better 4 U

Hello adayswork,

I have yet to try 6MP. I think my doctor was originally concerned by combining it with a biologic drug like humira because the increase risk for cancer but I wouldn't take it off the table.
