Hey everybody! If you are on the Ostomy board you have probably seen me post, and I was directed from the ostomy board to post this over on this board to show some people you really can do ANYTHING after surgery! I am about the most extreme example of this, I race motocross.

My story very quickly!
-I was diagnosed with UC at 18 years old, tried all the medicine, went into a flair about every 8 months or so for 3 years, each time I was hospitalized, and would get down to about 118 pounds (I am a 6 foot athletic guy). I have had I believe 3 or 4 blood transfusions and way too many trips to the ER, especially at 21 years old.

My last thing to try was Remicade, which did pull me out of a flair and kept me in remission for about 10 months. I then got hit with the worst one yet. I was rushed to the ER extremely low on blood and extremely dehydrated. The doctors told me if I wasn't so young, it may have been a very close call!

Anyways, I told myself when I started Remicade, that if I had another flair, I am having surgery with no hesitation, and that is what I did. I had a colonoscopy and the surgeon told me there was basically no chance anyways to NOT have surgery. I went into my first surgery at about 118 pounds, the surgery itself went as good as possible being how sick I was. I had a tough recovery but I kept fighting and I got out of there and went back to work, and started living my life again.

After about 8 months I went in for my J pouch surgery! turn

The surgery went textbook, I went in a lot healthier this time around and the recovery, although tough, was MUCH better then my first. I went back to work in about 2 months, starting very slowly (thankfully I have a great job and a great boss and they stuck with me through all this!) Long story short, I am now a year out of surgery and this is my update :)

Great pics! Thanks for posting. Having surgery doesn't mean your doomed to a life of misery. Just the opposite. Your UC story sounds just like mine was. I thank God everyday for this amazing procedure.

Congratulations on your recovery!

New to the forum...
What is life like with a j-pouch? Bowel movements normal? Bathroom visits frequent?
I am a very active person as well...exercising A LOT, cycling A LOT, hiking, paddling, etc...
Am worried that Remicade is my next step but DO NOT want to do it. Am thinking I would rather J it.

Thanks everyone! 53rd very true! LOL I am actually at the MX track for about 6 hours straight and never have to go to the bathroom :)

and partypooper...

MY life with my J pouch is great! No complaints whatsoever. Besides the fact that if I am about to go on a long haul or be doing something for a while I'll go ahead and go to the bathroom and "empty everything".

I go to the bathroom maybe every 4-6 hours or so, which is about 4-6 times a day probably. One thing that will make it even longer between bathroom visits is immodium, I was told this by my surgeon and it does work wonders.

Remicade is an amazing drug IF it works... for me it worked for a bit, and then I guess I became immune to it quickly or something and the UC won that battle!

Great to hear!!! I have been on remicade for almost three years and my recent scope showed that my ulcers and inflammation are back.  I now have severe uc throughout my whole colon so I won't be able to stay on remicade much longer.  I am back where I started.  My remicade levels are fine so it just isn't working anymore.  Thanks for posting and giving me a little hope that surgery is a good thing for some people.  I know I will be headed down that road soon.

First of all thank you! It feels awesome to be back to life!

Remicade IS a great drug, but being the great drug that is it, I believe for those of us like you and I with a severe case of UC, it is basically just delaying the inevitable. I was like you, when I got thrown back into a flare while on remicade, it was VERY BAD, my surgeon said it was one of the worst he has seen and I had one of the top surgeons in the country, and is the head of surgery at UNC Hospitals.

That being said, the surgery is a tough road, I can't sit here and tell people that it was easy and I was back to being myself like I am now in no time. It was a tough recovery, but most of this was due to me going into my first surgery as an emergency surgery as I was extremely sick... The whole 8 months with the ostomy was tough to get used to but I realized that little bag saved my life!

Life after surgery is absolutely great! I look at each day as a blessing and feel like praising my surgeon for performing the miracle of this surgery.... Anyways, as you see, I am living about as active as a life as possible. I have taken some nasty falls in motocross, I am actually a soccer goalkeeper, and also wakeboard.... So there is nothing you can't do after surgery!

I view my surgery as nothing short of a miracle too. If you knew how sick I was you'd understand why I say that! And yes, for sure we have to give props to the skill of our surgeons. It's an amazing procedure. I hope these positive stories can help ease the fears of those who are running out of options.

ByeByeUC I'm in the exact same mindset... I was so ridiculously sick I didn't think it was ever going to end... Thank God for these amazing surgeons and this amazing surgery!

Well, Sunday, this j poucher broke his collar bone in a nasty MX crash. Took a HARD hit to the abdomen area too and everything j pouch wise is all good! Sitting here now typing with one hand with a sling on, surgery Thursday. Thought I would let you guys know I took an extremely hard and scary fall that snapped my collar bone and my j pouch is 100% fine!

Thanks the hit was so hard to my abdomen there was worries of internal injuries and a broken hip/pelvis... So this j pouch is strrrrrong! :)

Relieved to hear your accident didn't cause any worse damage...but functioning with a broken collarbone can still be a challenge.
Which side did you break? and is it your dominant side?

Hope you heal quickly with no problems. Play safe!

Quincy it is my right (dominant) side. I've gotten pretty good at typing with just my left hand lol.... It does not help functioning that my whole body feels like I was hit by a train! Thank you Quincy! Hoping for a quick recovery

Thats awesome!!! Glad to hear there is light at the end of this dark tunnel, especially when surgery was brought up again at my last apptmnt and the 'indefinite for dysplasia' biopsy.
