The link above is titled "carbon monoxide soothes inflammatory bowel disease"...scientific proof, it's been known for quite some time now.
The meds most are taking for their IBD do some horrific things to the body as well.
To each their own and I would hope that in this day and age, considering there hasn't been a miracle cure found for us to date and considering this disease is over 100 yrs old now that people would be more supportive.
We ALL know smoking is not good for our health in general, people will do desperate things in desperate times and more understanding/support would be helpful. There are lots of things that aren't good for us that we are all guilty of doing, poor diet, excessive alcohol, lack of exercise, the list goes on.
6 smokes/day does my crohn's colitis better than when I quit smoking all together and went through 3 yrs of my flare being worse than ever in my 21 yrs of having IBD.
And by the way, my colon and rectum surgeon actually did tell me 20 yrs ago not to stop smoking because they even knew then that nicotine had a possitive/helful effect on inflammation in the colon which is mainly where my CD has been active (along with perianal disease) and same with my family doc, he said I could cut down on my smoking rather than quit all together due to the facts they knew about nicotine being a benefit.
Everyone is different, what helps one may not help another...but since they have learned about the carbon monoxide being the real help, they have since started trying to develop a med that mimics what CO does, without all the other harmful effects of smoking. Once they have this med ready for human consumption, if it works for me, then I will quit my 6 smokes/day.
