Reading the posts here and on the Crohn's forum it struck me that Hashimoto's could also be
contributing to some of the problems that Ibd patients are suffering from. Like IBD, Hashimoto's is
an autoimmune diesease with symptoms such as extreme fatigue, depression, allergies, memory
loss, muscle and joint pain, digestive disorders, heartbeat irregularities, etc.
If your doctor just tested your TSH level and it was normal, that does not mean that you don't have
Hashi's. My daughter has Crohn's but it just seemed like a lot of her symptoms could be Hashimoto's
because I suffer from it also. The doctor tested her TSH and it was normal, in fact it was low normal.
We finally had her thyroid antibodies tested and they were positive, so she is suffering from Hashi's
also. I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about Hashimoto's disease and especially the treatment.
There seems to be no consensus about treatment and even about which thyroid lab tests to run
and what are normal lab values.
I have been reading a lot of material about it and there is research indicating a gluten connection with
Hashimoto's and autoimmune disease in general. If you are interested in finding out more, I posted on
the thyroid disorders forum listing some books and a couple of web sites that I think are helpful
sources of information about Hashimoto's, the most common form of hypothryroidism.
And if your thyroid antibodies tests are negative, you may still have it. I know from experience because
my tests are always varying, so don't necessarily accept the results of one test.
