What other health issues did you develop after getting UC?

Which health issues did you develop or which existing health issues worsened after getting UC? I'm just curious because it seems that my body has been falling apart since my second flare 4 years ago.

My list:
-narcolepsy (diagnosed last week, some consider it to be an AI disease)
-IBS--lactose, gluten, and bean intolerance
-oral allergy syndrome worsened from bananas to all fresh fruits
-environmental allergies worsened by A LOT
-endometriosis (I'm pretty sure this existed way before UC but got really bad afterwards)
-migraines
-ovarian cysts

None and I'm. 11 years post op with no UC.

i developed osteopenia, costochondritis, numbness and tingling in my feet, and my allergies came back.

Before Uc the only problem I had was Raynaud's and Psoriasis but after I now have:

Peripheral arthritis
Rosacea
Peri-oral dermatitis
Fibromyalgia (though this could've been triggered by a car accident)
Sacroiilitis
IBS
Diverticulosis
Dry Eye Syndrome
Ovarian cysts
Acid Reflux

I'm an AI mess but both the Remi and 6mp have kept most of these things tame lately :)

Oh, I had forgotten about acid reflux and osteopenia (which has been reversed with calcium and vitamin D supplementation).

Red--I'm glad Remi is keeping more than your UC in control!

killcolitis--It looks like I'm already doing a lot of the things recommended for leaky gut theory treatments:
-gluten-free
-low sugar (a couple pinches of Stevia in my chai, a small piece of dark chocolate after lunch and dinner, the occasional fruit or baked good)
-low dairy and casein (cheese on GF pizza once a week; I did go completely dairy-free for a few weeks--no difference)
-soy-free
-probiotics (typically VSL #3, although I sometimes switch it up with Align sometimes); I use Beano, which I think is a digestive enzyme, as needed
-low caffeine (a cup of chai every morning; also went completely caffeine-free at one point--no difference); drink water the rest of the day
-multivitamin + vit D
-low meat intake (organic, hormone-free grilled chicken couple times a week, turkey occasionally)
-I try to buy as much organic and natural as possible (food, beauty products, and cleaning products)
-don't drink alcohol

I used to take fish oil, but it gave me huge bruises. Turmeric supplement, as well as homeopathic and chiropractic treatments, made no difference. Acupunture/acupressure/massage has helped with the migraines, so I do it once a month. I run about 3 miles 2-3 times/week and do stretching and core pilates daily. I will be getting surgery to diagnose and treat endometriosis in May.

I'm not sure what else to do. There are some naturopaths in my area, but they do not accept insurance and their fees (visits, tests and supplements) are outrageous. I definitely can't afford them, especially with how much my meds and diet/lifestyle are costing me.

It didnt bring oter health issues but mainly 2 things radicaly changed:

-my immune system is more fragile- I get most viruses and i do fever once in a while.

-my energy level changed and im still a very hard working person so havent learn when to stop!

I feel in a way lucky compared to other sufferers. Knock on wood

Yes I know I'm frustrated too. Re: autism - as a cause? I would think it would be dismissed. I think it become easy to throw the baby out with the bathwater when people start making over the top claims about causes and cures. I do believe in leaky gut though and I think it's fairly accepted by many docs. I just read an article in the local paper here about a top fibromyalgia doc at one of the best hospital in probably the country talking about food intolerance/leaky gut. I'll post the article if I can find it. It is a needle in a haystack situation. If your scopes were clean and your in full remission then I have no idea if this even applies to you? I wish there was some actual research being done on this type of thing but I wouldn't wait hold my breath for it. I wish I could just leave it up to the docs and have faith in the FDA, I think I would have been able to maintain more of my sanity if I had been able to do that. I just mentioned it as something to explore if you had any inclination to do so. Hope things are under control and all is well at work/school.

     Osteoporosis, but I don't believe it was the UP that caused it.  I attribute the osteoporosis from my prednisone dependency before my operation.  While on prednisone, I also developed type 2 diabetes and had uncontrollable high blood pressure.

     Since my operation and off the prednisone, I no longer have the diabetes, my blood pressure is easily controlled with only 1 pill per day (I was on three different blood pressure meds), but I will forever have osteoporosis.

I did have the abscess/fistula, but both my GI and CR Surgeon believe it was not related to my UC.

I also forgot to add that my skin issues (acne, eczema) got worse, and I developed recurrent staph infection boils and chemical sensitivities. *sigh*

bananagirl, I got my bone scan a little over a year after my UC symptoms started. And I was in remission for 6 of those months. So it's hard to say if this was a UC probelm for me. I really did (do) hate milk.

killcolitis, thanks for the suggestions. But I'm so sick of researching various treatments that lack scientific proof. It takes so much time (as you know)--it's not like you can go on PubMed and find all the articles about the topic! Not to mention that I have to do research for school and work...

Good luck with your surgery Carlie! I have a good friend that just had a total hysterectomy not too long ago. She is doing extremely well :)

BW, totally understand. It does lead to burn out. Stay focused and I hope your UC at least stays in a solid remission and you manage to enjoy the summer.
