The shingles vaccine before starting on drugs like Humira?

I have had chicken pox and am over 65. You can't get the vaccine once you are on the meds. I am thinking of starting the meds(possibly Humira) next month after my doc appointment. Should I hurry and get the vaccine first?  Shingles are high risk for people taking this medicine.  Opinion?

The shingles website says if you have had the chicken pox(I have) and especially of you are 50 + years (I am)you have a good chance of getting shingles. It also says if you are on drugs to supress your immune system you have a high chance of getting shingles.

Anyone over the age of 50 who had chicken pox needs this vaccine. But it's expensive, over $200.00.

My boss who is 59 just contracted Shingles but caught it extremely early, she was prescribed powerful meds and told since she caught it early, her symptoms would be minimal, not severe. She's been able to work and feel relatively good while treating this bout with Shingles. But her doctor said had she taken the vaccine, she might not have contracted Shingles. She's now telling everyone and anyone over the age of 50 who had CP as a child, to get the shot.

I know I need one but the expense is stopping me. If I'm going to shell out $ for medical needs like this I'll get my colonoscopy first (slightly overdue for it, if I pay cash the day of, my bill will only be $720.00).

Joylu- I see that your colitis was triggered because of quitting smoking. This happened to me as well. I was wondering if you tried nicotine patches or e-cigs to try to replace the smoking.

Before you go ahead and get that vaccine, take a look at this article on how to manage shingles effectively, as there is no known cure, there are still other treatment options such as taking colloidal silver, olive leaf extract and proteolytic enzymes, plus other things: here.

That's a good question Joylu...I should have written that down to ask my doc at my recent appointment. I'll have to wait till October to ask her now.

I would probably get the vaccine...I've never had shingles, but based on those who have had it..I don't want it!! Plus, one can get it more than once, so maybe that's a good thing to consider.

I'm not on immunosuppressants, however...I think you have good grounds for considering it.

Ah, that would explain why my GI set me up right away with Flu, Pneumonia, and Hep A-C vaccines. Didn't say anything about shingles tho, and he's generally thorough. Or TB and Tetanus.
