L-glutamine

What do you know about L-glutamine and ulcerative colitis?  Has a doc, naturopath, or nutritionist ever recommended it?

Does it aid the effects of probiotics?

Are you taking glutamine and at what dosages?

I bought some to try and couldn't choke it down (it's vile!) But today I went ahead and put it in juice. Probably not as good because it says to take it in water. But I figure some is better than nothing!

We had L-Glutamine and Arginine recommended by a clinical nutritionist who seemed very knowledgeable about UC from hospital work. The product "Muscle Armor" was specifically recommended. It is made by EAS, which is owned by Abbott Labs. It contains a mixture they call "Juven" technology, which includes L-Glutatmine, Arginine and something called HMB. It comes in powder form and actual tastes pretty good (lemonade flavor). This seems like a good supplement because the Colon uses L-Glutamine and Arginine. The HMB is supposed to enhance wound healing. I believe that if you look up Abbott and Juven together you will see that these supplements are given to patients recovering from wounds and surgery. Muscle Armor, while not inexpensive was the least expensive form of this supplement we could find that tasted good.
Bottom line to us was that it sounded good at least from a nutritional standpoint, especially during flares when getting sufficient nutrition can be very difficult. We would be very interested in other opinions on these supplements, especially any possible adverse affects. Seems like good safe nutritional supplements that may help the healing process, but this is obviously a very complicated subject.

I have been taking one heaping teaspoon of l-glutamine since September, so about 5 1/2 months. It helps my chronic D (I do not have inflammation, blood etc.) somewhat, but is certainly not the solution by any means.

I took 4500mg a day from April 2009 through January 2010. In April I was in a middle of a flare and I flared a second time in September which lasted until December. I concluded that it didn't affect my UC. Now if it had affected my manhood, like it did for mudua, then I would have continued to take it.

Mudua, are you serious? I am now thinking if I have had a similar erectile reaction to l-glutamine.

If not preventing flares, do people think that it aids the healing process?

Yes I am serious

I take about a 1/2 a teaspoon of the powder first thing in the morning. It is suppose to heal the colon. It seems to help me. I use the one from the Vitamin Shoppe, it doesn't taste bad at all and I use it with water only. I don't like taking products that the L-glutamine is combined with, you never know what can upset your colon.

Very helpful to aid in the healing of stomach. It's a natural amino acid produced by our bodies that nourishes the cells. Alot of body builders use it post workouts to stimulate muscle growth and repair damaged tissue. It's all natural (if you invest in a 100% real product), I use Vital Nutrients. Expensive, but I believed its helped, along with the herbs and medicine I've used.

i tried l-glutamine recently, but i didn't feel well after taking it so i stopped (it could be a coincidence as well). There was also a warning on the Polish uc forum that l-glutamine raises blood glucose significantly
