My 13 y/o son has Type 1 Diabetes as well as Ulcerative Colitis.  Looking for hospital/clinic/doctor with experience in both conditions.  We are located in the midwest, but are willing to travel.  Any advice would be appreciated as the treatments are counterproductive.

steroids can raise blood sugars--------------BE CAREFUL!!!!!

im not even diabetic and the go thru the roof :( had to be put on insulin from predisone

I have Type 1 and UC too!  I also live in the Midwest and I love my GI.  My doctor is always hesitant to put me on steroids, because of how it raises my blood sugar.  A couple of years ago she was really pushing for me to take Humira, so I could stay away from steroids.  I never went on it and I don’t need either now.  I just take Apriso daily. 

Are you looking for a doctor who specializes in both? That might be hard to find, but it would be awesome if you could.  I am grateful that my GI is always very conscious of how drugs might affect my diabetes.  I see a rheumatologist for joint issues related to UC and he is very good to consider both, as well.

What state are you in?

We're in Michigan so Chicago, Detroit, Ohio, etc. are all options. This is his 2nd time on steroids now as well as Imuran and Lialda for the colitis and he wears a pump to control the diabetes. We have tripled his basal, but his A1C still goes haywire when he is on steroids. Unfortunately, it's the only thing that has controlled the colitis so far :(

I'm thinking of looking at pediatric teaching hospitals just to find doctors who are familiar with both.

the epicentre of the gastro world seems to be the University of Chicago. we have been patients of Dr. Barbara Kirschner in pediatrics. Big brains in her practice when you need them.

Can you Boston? My daughter's had three GIs and two other opinions and I was most impressed with Dr Athos Bousvarous at Boston Children's. I would move her care there if I could. I know a couple of children who have been treated my him and the parents are very happy - one also had another issue develop and I believe he is on top of it (monitoring both, liaising with his colleagues etc).
CHOP is supposed to be the top for pediatric IBD in the US but I don't know if you could make it there either and I don't have any personal experience with it.
I hope your son responds to the imuran and everything is under control soon.
