Just looking for input. I am currently in remission after 3 1/2 years of flaring. Two failed pregnancies later I am considering getting my tubes tied. My GI said he wouldn't for fear if disturbing something and setting off a flare. The OB seems unconcerned. Anybody have experience with this surgery? Would like some advice. Thanks.

I had a complete hysterectomy and ovaries removed 2 weeks ago... I finished my prednisone taper on a friday
and had the surgery the following Monday. I also had a ureter sling put in while they were in there. I have not flared
since the surgery... and it was a major surgery.

WOW, there are other options besides them "going in" and doing invasive surgery and I'm shocked your doc didn't share all options with you! 19 yrs ago after my second baby I had tubal clips put on my tubes, a tiny incision in my belly button and another one right at the top of my pubic bone, they went in laproscopically, it was day surgery (19 yrs ago), the only pain I felt was the stiffness in my neck from the anesthetic...I was told not to lift anything heavy for 10 days...it was a piece of cake.

The clips stay on permanantly and the risk of pregnancy (if done correctly is 0) if not done correctly it's still very very small...it's suppose to be reversible but the longer you have them on, the less chance you will have sucess getting pregnant after getting them removed and apparently getting them removed is more of a surgery compared to getting them put on (they'd have to cut you open to remove them...at least that's what they told me 19 yrs ago.

That's what I was getting. Laparoscopically done. My GI said don't do. I think I'm going to do it though for peace of mind. I can't take the pill and don't want to lose another baby at 42. I also now have Graves disease. Thanks notsosicklygirl!!! I feel great thanks to the LDN.

Can your husband have a vasectomy? I think that's a very easy procedure. You could also consider something like mirena. I use the pill and I wish I could stop but unfortunately, my skin gets terrible when I don't take the hormones.

My GI encourage me to get the laproscopic tubal clipping done and so did my GYN, we talke to the GYN about my hubby getting a vasectomy and the GYN said of course that was an option, but one thing to consider was I was the sick one and there have been the very rare cases that even with a vasectomy pregnancy could occur and if that happened I would be faced with having an unwanted baby and dealing with those choices....I'm glad I had it done...no more worries of pregnancy or having to use other forms of BC.

To each their own of course, but I'm confused why your GI is against it since it's not an invasive procedure to have the clips put on the tubes.

I really don't know why he said it. I was just so sick for so long I guess he doesn't want to risk an upset. I feel great now though and for peace of mind I feel I should.

Definitely if you're feeling good right now, gut wise, go for it especially if you feel it's the right choice for you....I was actually flaring (as I have been the entire time since getting DX 21 yrs ago now) when I had mine done...mine was so great and so easy and it was nice to get a little pampered at home even though I didn't really need it.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I had it done over a year ago and it didn't help or hurt my UC. I feel worry free of getting pregnant!

Same here therearemiricales, having it done didn't have any affect on my CD either, mind you it sure would have been nice if it would have put me in remission but no such luck...it certainly had no bearing on me getting worse as a result, my CD has basically been a rollercoaster of flaring to some degree since I first became ill, regardless of having the tubal clips put on.

Every person is different, but I suspect that your GI is concerned about the antibiotics that are routinely administered at the end of surgery. I had a ligation in 97 that did not include clips but rather cauterization and was done laproscopically, but that was before I had UC. I've had 4 surgeries since being diagnosed with UC, and did have a problem with a minor flare after two that came pretty much right on top of each other. I also had some dental work done for which I was prescribed an antibiotic as a prophylactic measure against infection. Knowing what I know now, I am less inclined to take antibiotics for minor procedures and in your shoes, I would discuss with the proposed surgeon the fact that many of us are sensitive to antibiotics to see if there are other options at the end of surgery.

My OB said I wouldn't be given antibiotics.

Really? That's weird Boxermom, even for dental surgeries/root canals and such they give antibiotics just in case for risk of keeping infections at bay...they gave me antis and pain killers, I did no worse taking the antis at that time and that was before I knew anything about probiotics which I take everyday and plan to indefinitely.

Probiotics are very helpful, especially for times we need to be on antibiotics, key is to take your pros at least 2 hours after you're done your antis for the day.
