Prednisone and LDN

My son's GI finally agreed to let us try LDN. He has started my son on 2mg liquid, however according to the information that I am reading, LDN should not be taken with prednisone. My son is currently on 40mg prednisone to try and get this awful flare under control. As of yesterday, they also started him on Imuran 50 mg. I absoloutely HATE these medications but I don't know what else to do right now. For those of you taking LDN, have you ever taken it along with prednisone and Imuran? It just seems to me that one wouldn't get any benefit from the LDN since it increases the immune system and prednisone supresses it.

I don't really understand how LDN works exactly but there's a lot of misinformation on the boards about it. I've emailed Jill Smith about it in the past (my daughter is on it) and according to her it is okay to use LDN with pred, remicade etc so I just go by that. You can email her if you want confirmation - she will respond though it might take some time. Good luck to your son, I hope this does the trick for him.

Thanks Brian....I placed a call to "Skip's" Pharmacy and the pharmacist that I spoke to said not to take them together based on my son being on the 40 mg dose of prednisone. Maybe its ok if the prednisone dose is lower, I don't know. Have you had any results from the LDN yet?

I started it around 20MG so that may be possible. I have not really seen a change in symptoms but I was having no symptoms when I started it, since I was able to successfully taper off the prednisone I would call it a success so far.

The LDN site mentions 10 mg as the max dose recommended to begin but it's not a prohibition as such- merely that its effect my be cancelled out. I just restarted LDN after stopping it for a week (stopped it in order to try and get it to kick in therapeutically again) and was tapering through 20 mg at the time I restarted. The cancellation effect would probably be much bigger though with powerful immune suppresants like biologics or Imuran and 6MP IMO, but see what Skip's says since they seem to have the most experience, even if it's all anecdotal.

I've used all 3 together: LDN, prednisone & Imuran. I've noticed no interactions.

Now that I think about it for about 3-4 months that I did all 3. I'd been on LDN and it worked great for my UC at the beginning but was no longer controlling the bleeding anymore. I had uveitis that was also requiring the move to Imuran. But the Imuran was not controlling the bleeding (yet, so they thought) so I was still on 5mg of Prednisone (plus Prednisolone eye drops for my eyes as needed) for 3 months before that normal reoccurring flare finally ended.

From what I had read online when I started LDN - it also depresses an over-active immune system. In my case that does seem to be what it was doing so it made since that the medications could overlap.
