left sided to pancolitis

Has your UC advanced further up your colon? I was diagnosed with left sided UC about 13 years ago via a colonoscopy. This diagnoses was confirmed with another colonoscopy the following year. Since then I have not had another colonoscopy until this past Friday. After the scope my doc said he thought he had seen evidence of colitis throughout the entire colon. We have to wait for the biopsies to come back for more info, but that was his initial thought. So, unless my original diagnoses was incorrect, it may be that my UC has spread. Has this happened to anyone else? This may also explain why mesalamine enemas started to fail to work to put me into remission after having worked for a few years.

Hi..not for me, but there have been many others which this has happened.

Were you not on any oral 5ASA meds?

I haven't been diagnosed with pancolitis but my Uc has spread. It started as UP and now I am classified as left sided - inflammation seen up to the splenic fixture/traverse area.

My UC started on the left side then after adverse events it spread through my colon. It's now back down to being in the rectal area..so it can move up and down your colon depending on the disease activity.

hance the push from many of us to use the rectal meds to treat as early as possible to hopefully keep it as controlled as possible...that's assuming all above it is being treated as well.

At least it's something we can do for ourselves. And if we are being consistent in knowing our early flare symptoms and knowing what the results should be regarding early treatment...if anything is out of the ordinary regarding symptoms, it could very well be an "invader"...

Mine has also spread from being just UP to left sided...hopefully it doesn't advance further...stayed as proctitis for a long time, but I can't help but wonder now if it will continue. I've been on 5ASA's tablets and enemas the whole time...

I started with UP 5 cm in 09, the next year it was colitis 44cm, this year its all Colon, Pancolitis, however having good treatment and doing well at the moment.

Yes Quincy, I have always been on oral 5asa meds. While I think they help me maintain remission, they are not perfect. I have had some whopper flares after both my pregnancies that came on fast and strong. Also, during one flare I really focused mostly on natural remedies in order to see how I responded and so I was inflamed much longer than I otherwise would have been. Who knows why it changed? Any ideas?

I was initially diagnosed with proctitis and within a year or two, it spread to become pancolitis.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with very mild proctitis, used only Canasa occasionally and had no symptoms for 4 years. Then, it progressed to pancolitis... Rectal meds are very helpful for me, and I used them as soon as I see a sign of inflammation. Hopefully, I won't have any major flare soon.

Mine started as UP then within a few months progressed to Pancolitis. I know have an ostomy.

Mine has advanced - 18 years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis and now its all the way up my left side and a little around the corner, with patchy spots after that.  My last colonoscopy was a year ago and at that time I had no signs of disease (my colon looked normal). But I'm pretty sure with this current flare-up it has spread further as I've been having pain in my left side higher up which I never had in the past.  I won't know till my next colonoscopy next year but the flex sig I had in January showed alot of inflamation up to the point they went with that scope. 

I kept my disease under control for 10 years which I think prevented it from spreading further. I feel like once you flare up, you always have a chance it will spread the longer you are in the flare.
