I have been on Imuran for 11 years now. I don't think it has done anything to weaken my immune system. I already had low white counts because of my liver disease; I usually run in the 1.0 area, and last summer dropped to a .4 I am lucky to have not been majorly sick. I never had the flu or any type of sickness this winter, but usually I will get a good cold in the fall and in the spring. This year I haven't *knock on wood*.
We are all surrounded by so many germs all the time. The past 4 years I have been in college too, the amount of germs on the campus is outragoues. One class tested different hard surface areas to see what kind of bacteria grew on them. A bench, a library counter, and some other places had e-coli growing on them!
I agree with Sibby; you don't have to be paranoid, but be aware. I wash my hands or put on anti-bacterial and take a lot of Vitamin C. Swimming in a lake shouldn't be a problem, I have done it and had no problems ever. And I try to stay away from sick people!!
Good luck with the Imuran.
