Ulcerative Colitis, Asacol and Gastritis?

Hi All,
I'm struggling and I need some help sad
I've had ulcerative colitis for twelve years and since my first flare up it's been quiet and I've been on Asacol.
However, for a few years I've occasionally had bloating and pain in my upper tummy at night.
Recently, over the past three weeks, this has turned into a sharp stabbing pain in my tummy which comes and goes, pain just under the breastbone and a feeling of a lump in the throat, with maybe heartburn.
I went to my doctors and they diagnosed gastritis (I've not had tests for this) and have been given a proton pump inhibitor (lansoprazole) to take for a month.
She said this couldn't be caused by my Asacol, as it's not an NSAID, but I thought it was...
I'm freaking out a bit about it all...
Anyone else ever had this?
I'm worried and can't call my hospital clinic till Monday... I tried them last week and they didn't call me back...

P.S. I had a test for H.pylori and it was negative. Also, my bloods are normal and I recently had a clear ultrasound of the upper abdomen.

Your Asacol is not the kind of medication that will cause gastritis, since it has a coating that keeps it intact until it reaches the colon. Gastritis without h.pylori can be from reflux and/or overproduction of stomach acid, which the ppi will definitely help. If you don't get relief from the lansoprazole then try another kind - sometimes it takes a bit of experimentation to figure out which ppi will work for you. You'll need to give it a week at least to see if it's helping.

My family history is extremely strong for colon cancer (maternal aunt and uncle, father, mother and older sister) and my mother had colitis. I have been diagnosed with proctitis and have been told by geneticists that gastric issues can be part of the pattern. I have had endoscopies and have found on one occasion to have gastritis. It cleared up with the meds you describe. good luck.

Thanks guys :) I'm just frightened because they misdiagnosed my UC for so long (they told me it was just worry and that if I didn't stop, I'd worry myself to death - way to stop a 16 year old worrying there guys!) I'll give it a while and see how I go, thank you xxx

P.S. The worry yourself to death bit was just after my dad had died from bowel cancer... Gotta love that bedside manner sometimes!
And UC-Pgh, you made me feel not alone, I'll call the clinic Monday to try to get an appointment, then discuss what you said about the link/pattern with my consultant. Big thanks x

Regarding your UC...are you on medications?

Since you have bowel cancer in your family...I hope you get regular c-scopes with lots of biopsies!

Did doctor give you any dietary info to help cope with gastritis discomfort? I would beware of highly-acidic food/drink in general. It seems to me that UCers need moderation in what we send down the alimentary canal. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
