Dear UC friends,
I received some advice the other day about a type of enema that works better than the steroid type. I know the name of it started with an "m" but I can't remember what it was called. I am going to the dr in a few hourd and would like to discuss this type of enema with her. Please help me with the name of this enema. Thanks and have a blessed day!!

Try the mesalamine ones first before going on a steroid enema. Brand name is Rowasa in the U.S. Give them a good 4-6 weeks to work as well. Healing will take time, although you will probably see good results before then. They work great for me. Good luck. :)

Can you increase your Asacol? You're on the lowest dose, just a maintenance dose. Sulfasalazine is cheaper if cost is an issue with you being able to take it, as I see in your signature.

I was on the steroid enemas. I haven't felt that good in that short of a time. I felt better in 2 days. But as soon as I stopped the steroid enema I got sick again. I am going to ask about a higher dose of Asacol today. I've taken the Sulfasalize. I had an allergic reaction to it. I have only one working kidney. I noticed the Rowasa enema says to be careful if you have had a history of kidney disease? Is there a type of foam enema that can be used during the day?

The Rowasa is a mesalamine enema, same medicine as is in Asacol, just in a different form. Asacol also says to be careful if you had kidney disease. Very rarely, mesalamines can cause kidney problems. Talk to your GI about it since you only have one working kidney. I'm not knowledgeable enough to give you advice on that. Unfortunately, there is no foam version of Rowasa in the U.S. I know there is one in Australia though. The one in the U.S. is a liquid. The only foam enema I know of here is a steroid enema -- Cortifoam. I've never used that one but many people have great success with it. Maybe that's the one you used previously?

Oh, I didn't know it was the same medicine in Asacol. I will talk with my GgI about the side effects thing. I'm not sure what king of steroid enema it was. It was liquid not foam. Thank you for the info. I appreciate it.

The dr gave me a prescription for 30 days of steroid enemas. I told him, "I have this lump in my throat. I noticed it when I have bloody bm's." I wanted to slap him. He said, "I've never heard of that." That's all he said. What the heck?! Next time I hope I see the PA. At least she listens to me & tries to help me!
