Pain/heavy in legs whilst in flare up

Diagnosed 2007 i am in middle of flare up not had one since last year, my legs went almost numb like heavy , pain- shooting pains, also all my joints ache, i'm on Pentesa 2000mg a day ... i've read on line that UC can cause joint aches and these leg spasums? any one else experinced this? difficult to stand in bed 4 2 days!

about 20% of people with IBD develop joint pain as part of their illness.

The pain in your legs that you describe might be sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs through the gluteus maximum and down into the leg, and muscle spasms in the lower back/gluteus can cause pain in this nerve. One of the common joints where people with IBD have pain is the sacroiliac joint, where the pelvis meets the spine. Pain in this joint inevitably leads to muscle spasms in the gluteus maximus.

Deep in the glutes is a small muscle called the piriformis. The sciatic nerve runs right through it. If you are having sciatic nerve pain, you might be able to relieve it by stretching the glutes so as to releive the muscle spasm in the piriformis. Look up "piriformis syndrome" and you will be able to read about how to stretch properly to ease this discomfort.

Your dose of Pentasa is the minimal therapeutic dose. Since you're in the midst of a flare, why are you not using a more effective dosage or other medications?

When I'm flaring, the pains I get are different than when I'm not.
Some of the pains/aches, especially down my legs, are very similar to that of when I got my periods.

Tylenol could help take the edge off.

As well, you should also be on rectal pentasa or other mesalamine enemas to help deal with the inflammation in the lower area.

     I suffered from proctitis (no more since surgery in 2010).  The pain from my rectum traveled down into both the insides of my legs.  I had to take hydrocodone.

It was more of a heavy pain achy - painfull achy joints, i was very worried people have said its a symptom, i've never ex this b4 so i was worried , i also experience bad mouth ulcers and get very tired, with that and my bowel movements thats how i was diagnosed!....... i haven't been told enough and i m worried about osteoporosis.. think i need to take Vitamin D, LIKE OTHERS .... i suffer from Anaemia swell from time to time! thanks for replys wink

I have just recently found this site and I'm so excited to read suggestions from others. I too have the heavy leg pain you are speaking of Tylenol usually helps a little. Wouldn't wish this on anyone but it's good to hear I'm not just falling apart.

I am 24 years old and have been recently diagnosed with UC back in February of this year. And oh my. Its really tough. I too get really bad pain in my legs down to my feet. Perhaps its lack of potassium after having so many BMs. I get awful stomach cramps. Sometimes are unbearable. Im pretty new to my diagnosis and have found lots of great advice on this forum. :)

I get numbing, joint pain you name it! All UC related I'm sure. And the predisone. I take L-glutamine supplements which has seemed to take the edge off the pain.
