Hi guys,

Just wondering, is there a difference between the two?

My partner had a colonoscopy last year, and is going for an endoscopy this week.

He's back on anal steroid foam and is hoping to see some improvement soon.

"endoscopy" technically refers to all scopes in general, both upper GI scopes and lower GI scopes. "colonoscopy" refers to just a lower GI scope (eg. when the camera enters through your anus and they scope just your large intestines and your ileum). In practice, however, "endoscopy" sometimes refers to upper GI scoping (eg. the camera enters through your mouth and examines your esophagus, stomach). Technically the name for upper GI scopes is "gastroscopy".

I am going for both in about 2 weeks.

In your situation, it would mean an upper scope. Especially since a c-scope was just done.

Not necessarily, Quincy. I have had colonoscopies/flex sigs only months apart when my doc wanted to know what had changed. If there is IBD involved and the doc just said endoscopy, I would assume it is referring to a colonoscopy. Usually if it is down the throat they will refer to it as "upper endoscopy". I have had one of those too.

Its not down the throat, its up the bum. :)

He seems fairly upbeat just now and I do think this helps him a lot.

I've never heard a c-scope called an endoscope, and on here, most endoscope mentions are upper....Yes, I know it could be either...I usually clarify when I hear it.

So, just curious.....didn't your partner get instructions as to what the preparation was to be? So I guess that's how you found out it was a butt-scope?

So, is he having a full colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy?

Hi quincy,

He has to take a drink to 'clear him out' before he goes for the camera. When he told me it was an endoscopy I asked him was he sure as I assumed an endoscopy was down the throat. Nope he said, definitely an endoscopy up the bum!

His consultant thinks the UC may have spread as when he was first diagnsosed last year, the upper part of his colon was 'beautiful' apparently!

He's been flaring for over a month now and he has his good days and bad days, but we are just trying to get through it and live with it as best as we can.

We are in England by the way, I think lots on here are in America :)
