Just had my scope today. apparently my UC is now in 3/4 of my colon. My GI didin't expect it to be that bad. He mentioned that when the wall of my colon was lightly touch I would bleed. I still got to get the biopsy report, but the main focus of his conversation was on surgery.
I've only been on the level 1 drugs... mesalamine, Prednisone, and Budesonide
His point was to have the surgery while I'm young and healthy enough to recover. I know things get touchy when you get older...but do I risk surgery or keep trying the meds? My next choice would be 6mp....and of course there's the issue with side effects too. I had my first experience with one time pancreatic from the mesalamines. I am very sensitive to the mesalamines to begin with. The next level the type of side effects get worst.
What are your thoughts on keeping with the meds or having surgery?
I would go ahead with the surgery if i was you. If thats the doctor's recommendation i would listen to him. Here's why:
I am currently in your situation but a little in the future. I've been daiganosed for the last 2 and a half years and have been struggling and suffering due to EVERY SINGLE MEDICATION THERAPY NOT working. The only one that worked was steroid therapy but taking prednisone is not good, very unhealthy in the long run and am now experiencing the negative sides of it. Trust me, you do NOT want to live the life I have lived in the last 2 years.
I tried Asacol at first, it failed.
Then was Lialda, that failed also.
Then was 6mp. 6mp takes like 2 months to kick in. This was a VERY ROUGH 2 months of flare ups. And at the end it failed no response.
Next was Remicade. Was on it for 7-8 months. After trying to taper off the prednisone for the nth time (i lost track) we concluded it failed.
(Keep in mind all this time i was on the preds and trying to taper off of it to see if the meds would work. Every time i tried coming off the preds, MASSIVE flare ups).
I am now at the point of surgery.
I am also young, 23. And since my recommendation from 2 doctors is to have surgery, i am finally going ahead ahead with it. I did not want to have surgery done, it was all my decision to try different meds, even though the doctor said its most likely not going to work.
If your doctor is telling you to have surgery now before he tries different med combinations, then i think he knows what he is talking about
