C Diff and UC Flare concurrently

OH, MY GOSH.  I don't even know how to explain what's going on with our daughter (12). She was in hospital for 15 days in May with an insane UC flare. Did well until end of June, then said she thought she was flaring again.

Turns out she has C. Diff....we are still fighting it. The Flagyl is not working. Her stool is just mucus and blood....not really any "poop" to the poop. 

Every time I give her VSL#3 probiotic, she gets bad cramps and heads to the bathroom.

Meanwhile, her UC began to flare (we think) and she's given herself a Humira injection.

She's a mess. I'm at a loss. She can't eat much and within 15 min or so she's in the bathroom. It's summer, she's 12, and house ridden!

Any far out suggestions? I'm ready to try something!

I'm sorry your daughter has to go through this. I know what it's like as my 8 yo son has UC although he never had to deal with c diff. Ask your doctor about fecal transplant if she doesn't respond to antibiotics. It might be difficult to convince the doctor since your daughter is only 12 yo but this procedure has a 90%+ success rate for c diff and it doesn't have all the side effects of abx. It is done by doctors as a last resort treatment for c diff.

I had c- diff and was treated with oral vancomycin the second time around and it worked. Also doc put me on florastor.

I can't begin to say how sympathetic I am for the young lady with c diff. How horrible to be young and so affected.

C diff frequently occurs after a round of antibiotics has depleted your immune system and stripped your intestines of all good flora. A year ago I had a fall brought about due to an extremely low sodium level and landed in the hospital. I was given a round of antibiotics to ward off possible infection due to cuts sustained in the fall. I left the hospital with c diff both the doctors and I thought the c diff was a flare. Three agonizing days of c diff led me to the conclusion something besides a flare was going on. I had never heard of c diff. Subsequent testing identified the c diff. Fortunately flagyl worked for me. I have since found out c diff is not that uncommon for those of us who have multiple health issues.

What works for one frequently doesn't work for another. I use the probiotic Benebiotic. Some on this forum have denigrated that brand. However, it has and is working for me. It is an enteric coated pill which might be easier on the digestive system. VSL3 needs refrigeration. Since I was traveling I wanted something that would travel well. Plus Benebiotics bought on the web is around $20 a bottle. VSL3 cost me $74 a bottle.

Again, my heart goes out to the whole family of the c diff sufferer. While she bears the physical pain, the parents bear the agony of not being able to help their child. I hope you all soon find some relief.

Florastor really helped me with c diff. Now I take it with antibiotics and am usually ok.
