Me? I flare all the time baby! Me and my U.C. we live busy lives. We're always in competition. I try to reach the bathroom in time, and U.C. tries to make me crap my pants before I reach it. Exciting!

I would say for sure once or maybe twice a year....depending on what's going on in my life.
You're on the Rowasa twice daily? for how long?
When you're better, how do you taper to maintenance?

Everyone is different. For me I have had only 2 flares. The first one lasted 2 ½ years followed by a 2½ year semi remission. The second one was 3 years long. That is when I decided to have my colon removed almost 4 years ago. I have been fine ever since but by no means completely normal.

So far I've just had the one flare. I'm extremely lucky.

I just really hate it when they call surgery a "cure". If it really was a total and complete cure I would do it in a heartbeat. They should call it what it is without using the word "cure". I think they need to look up the definition of cure in the dictionary.

I started the rowasa after my scope in April. I was using it most days of the week at night. Still had a bit of blood. But was ok. Then after a week of Advil (now I believ I have this) I got really bad with D.
My pred taper is 40 mg for 7 days then down by 5mg every 3 days. Does this sound about
right?
Also I'm on the cort enemas 2x day instead of rowasa at the moment. What are the problems associated with tapering from them, if any?

I've had two flares a year after diagnosis and another year after that. I do occasionally get some symptoms but before it turns into a full blown flare I've been able to adjust meds and take care of it. I haven't flared since last year when my flare ended in June. Hoping to stay flare free for a long time.

Well, I don't want to jinx myself, but-- I was diagnosed 17 years ago and in that time have had one flare since the initial diagnosis. It occurred when I went off all my meds to breastfeed. So, I have never flared while taking Asacol, and I wonder sometimes if that is because I take a lot of it and have used enemas in addition for many years.

i've had 3 "flares" but i didn't even know my first one was a flare. i'd trade that flare for this one ANY day.
2007- flare 1 (just blood and constipation)
2010 and 2011- flare 2 sept (bleeding) through november 2011 (all symptoms)
2012 - flare 3 february to now (all symptoms)

What exactly do you think it means...You cut the organ that is problemactic, the disease in the organ is not there anymore. It's pretty academic.
problems such as blockages, adhesions, etc...has nothing to do with U.C. disease.

I've had three flares since I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I've had minor symptoms on occasion.

I need to clarify that what I might classify as a flare, others might not.

Flare -Urgency, loose stools, blood , mucus, cramps, pain and maybe gas. What else might I be missing. Usually that's my flare. As its healing I'm only left with a few of the symptoms .
If you still have urgency are you still considered in a flare?

Depends on what kind of urgency. If I hold a bm too long, I soon have to go NOW. That urgency I wouldn't consider a flare.

yes, still flaring. That's the inflammation and mixed signals.
Once that eases, that's the first sign of absolute improvement.
Do you have dicyclomine? That can help somewhat with the spasming...

I was diagnosed 13 years ago. Since then I have flared every fall and a few times in the spring. So, mostly once per year with a few years flaring twice.

I know the question is how often do you flare, but really should it be, how often do you go into remission? I cannot wait to go into remission. What a treat that would be, four years and waiting............

First flare 2007, 2 months, asacol, imuran, decortin, than almost 3 years remission on just asacol 2x2, than 2010 second flare, less than 2 months, remicade and asacol, since than in remission, 2 years now. Panic afraid how long my second remission will last, feel fantastic now!
