Augmentin (antibiotic)?

I got savagely bitten by one of my cats last night (it got tangled up under our bed and freaked and went psycho as I tried to free it). long story short, the cat's fine but my arm looks like something out of a horror movie. It's swollen and very infected. My doctor, and I, are concerned as cat bitees, even when one's in good health and under normal circumstances, can be nasty...not to mention that I am on mercaptopurine which suppresses the immune system. Anyway, I've been prescribed Augmentin and am worried that it might derail my apparent reutrun to remission after a flare. Then again, I don't want some raging cat infection. Any experience with Augmentin? Please, no Ted Nugent jokes...

this won't help, but i have nightmares about augmentin. i had to take it when i was little- i can't remember what for though. it tastes like sewage if you have the liquid form of it.

i think you should take it though if the bite is that bad. you don't want the infection to spread and then you end up in the hospital. just up your probiotics right away.

We fear antibiotics and for good reason as they can make us feel worse. However you do need to take it. Cat and dog bites can be horrendous. Increase your probiotics if you take them and if your on any rectal meds use them nightly for a bit. And keep your fingers crossed. Hope things go well and your arm feels better.

I love cats and have many cat bite horror stories-Been there done that, and got a t-shirt.

Go to the local pharmacy and get Hibiclens (http://www.hibiclens.com/) It is an antimicrobial
soap. Soak the scratched/bitten area in almost hot epsom salt water for 10 to 15 minutes.
Then scrub the area with the Hibiclens and rinse. do this a couple times a day.

Cat bites are known to carry microbes from the saliva and can cause real bad infections
(staff) and a blood poisoning. Not to mention their claws and cat litter.

You can die from a cat bite or clawing...plain and simple...especially if you're already showing signs of infection.

I've taken that medication in the past...once for 2 full courses and never had a problem. It's called Clavulin here.

Take your probiotics and start it ASAP!

Add heavy doses of sacharomyces boulardi, as it's supposed to be impervious to antibiotics (unlike most probiotic)- though I woukd still take it, and other probiotics, several hours apart from when you take antibiotics.

Take very high dose probiotics of 50 billion or more in an enteric type form. The antibiotics will kill a lot of the probiotics so you need as high of a dose as possible and you need it to get where it needs to go. Even without antibiotics many probiotics are killed in the stomach. Simply eating 4 tubs of yogurt per day isn't enough. I greatly fear my UC any time I am on antibotics but I must admit the last time went way smoother than I feared due to the high dose enteric probiotics. I wasn't on Augmentin though.

Augmentin is especially rough on the gut. My son had numerous ear infections before we had tubes put in, and he was on augmentin a lot because amoxicillin wouldn't get rid of the ear infection. At any rate, we were able to keep the diarrhea at bay by super-dosing him with probiotics, given twice a day, at least two hours away from his antibiotics.

Interesting because the only antibiotic in augmentin is amoxicillian.

Gary, augmentin also has clavulanate potassium in addition to amoxicillin.

Well...I'm on day 2 of 3 days of antibiotic injections and a course of oral Augmentin. So far no colitis reflare...did start probiotics as a precaution (tried 'em before and got no results, good or bad). We'll see what happens. darn cat had a limp for a few hours and now just looks at me thinking "What you gonna do, punk?"

I'm so glad you're tolerating the Augmentin. For me, it's poison. After 12 hours on it, I literally can't leave the bathroom. And this is with doubled probiotics and Lomotil, which usually stops anything. But you just can't mess with cat bites, so I'm glad it's working for you.

Woke up this morning with the big D....nice way to start the day...feeling like I got flu-like symptoms. So, is it the Augmentin? Maybe some combo of the 10 million other meds I'm on all interacting? Maybe I got some cat-bite pathogens lurking in my blood stream? Maybe it's just the Apocalypse (I did, stupidly, eat at McDonald's twice yesterday...always a sure way to get the McGurggles)? All in time for potential hurricane Issac to hit (I live in the Florida Keys). It's all good.

Could be the mcd's...could be the antibiotics...could be a bug if you feel flu like. Hope you feel better and it doesn't continue.

I'd say it's a combo of everything. Make sure you take the probiotics AND fibre supplements (even a small amount), because that will help the probiotics work better.

I hope Issac doesn't hit hard. Hang tough!

Augmentin didn't agree with me. It was awful. I will never go on it again. Lasted about 24hrs, then went to walk in clinic to be prescribed a different antibiotic. They gave me IV fluids and a high dose shot of Zofran thru the IV.
