OK, so we had our elections and Pauline Marois and her quebecois party won with a minority government which is not bad. It could have been worse, she could have ended up with a majority. shocked

She vows to enforce Bill 101. Parts of the bill is forcing businesses to communicate with customers in french if the customer is french.

I.e.:

Say.you own a ....I dunno, a corner store. Well if you happen to own one in Quebec, you're going to be forced to speak french one way or another with your customers.

If you are an employee in a company of 11 workers or more, well you'd best be speaking french as much as possible with your co-workers. So if you want to have a coffee break with John, ask him in french. yeah? W.T.F.

this one is the icing...you ready?

If you live in Quebec and your first official language is french, you are not allowed to go to an English speaking college in Quebec. olollololollolol

This is to protect the mother tongue. rolleyes

Hey, I'm down here in Texas with all the Spanish speakers. I don't know much about Canada. Explain more about the language dynamics there.

I'm from Montreal, and I am so embarassed and upset that I live in a province that elected that woman. The things that some dude wrote are just the tip of the iceberg. This woman has it out for the anglophones and immigrants. She is truly horrible.

I am actually thinking of moving. I don't want to live in a society that is governed by such an intolerant person.

If the British had not won the French & Indian War a few centuries back, all of us in North America would likely be speaking French as a mother tongue. It's a beautiful language, IMHO-- so is Czech, the Italian of the Slavic language family. In short, let us all say BONJOUR! The more languages one knows, the richer one's life experiences will be. Canada supports bilingualism. Since French and English are the two official languages they are enforced through out the provinces.

So, if it's a stop sign. It reads: STOP / ARRET

Most of everything you buy, has to have writings in French and English.

The Liberal party introduced at one point a Health Tax. Roughly, it's 200$ per year per person. This is as basic I can go.

The whole point of this TAX (weather you agree with it or not) is to generate more revenue for the in-debt province. I mean, since we're so generous with our social services, god forbid the government asks for some money.

We want want want want want want all for free or barely nothing. Then? what 200$ ....OUTRAGEOUS.

In comes Pauline Marois to the rescue with her Quebec Party:

No, no, no guys. That's not how you do it. We're going change this whole health tax. If you make over a certain amount of money THEN you are taxed. So, if you went to school and got a good paying job, then sucks for you, you're going to pay. Joe blow that did nothing with his life, scratches his balls and drinks his beer on the porch doesn't need to pay.

I'm fair, how about we do a percentage of someone's yearly income. So if someone would make 100k per year, he'd pay max 200. You make 50k, you pay 100, 25k ....50 dollars. So on and so forth.

The advantage of posting it here is simply peace. Most of you, don't even in live in Quebec so there is no real arguments. You can easily ignore the thread, or just read it quickly to pass the time.

However, if I do go to a Quebec political forum...oh man.....it could be wild wild west. lol


Pauline promised the students that when she is in power, she's going to reverse Bill 78 and she's going to repay every student the tuition price increase that they were charged under the previous government. OLOLOLOLOOOOLOOLLOLLOLL


Pauline is going to do this with a minority government with 2 strong oppositions ( Liberal and Coalition). In should be noted that the tuition increase is supported by both the Liberals and the Coalition party. rofl

Ucinmtl I'm from Montreal too.

And I'm a frog Canadian on top of that aha.

The main problem is most french Canadians don't speak much English outside Montreal of if they do they are pretty terrible at it! But everything seems to be around Montreal. And yes that has become a very bilingual city.

However that got me, as a young age, to learn English pretty quick... well this and Seinfeld on channel 12!

The main problem about politics in Quebec is that there is 2 main parties that are extreme, barely a choice in the middle. And it's still a minority of old hippies and hard core extremists that wants the independance. They are still sore from their lost in 1980 but reality has change and economy as well. And it seems anglophones and francophones are mixing up much more nowadays.

But eh nice to find someone from Montreal! But I moved to England almost a year ago:P

Hey Old Hat, didn't know you have a Hungarian background too!!! My parents left Hungary during the revolution in '56 (not together though...they met in AB) Mom came to Canada with my eldest and only brother (on mom's side) and my eldest sister...she landed in Nova Scotia, and met another Hungarian man and had another sister there, they moved to Niagra Falls, Canada and had another sister there, they moved to Winnipeg and had another sister there, they came to AB and split, then she met my Dad (also from Hungary as I mentioned) and they had me...that was it finally for my mom (with the exception of 2 other miscarriages she had with my dad, one before me and one after me) so technically I'm an only child lol...and technically the only thing that makes me Canadian is that I was born here lol. My dad came to Canada with my eldest sister and left his son/my other brother behind in Hungary with his wife...I have lots of half siblings.

Somedude...Regarding premiers...I'm not too impressed with Redford (PC) and in the last election we just had, for the first time I voted for a different party....I was a long time PCer but Redford put a bad taste in my mouth along with the last few PC premiers we had.

Also, in AB, french-canadian isn't really enforced here....we only have "STOP" written on our signs (which mainly all only have english writing on them throughout the cities...same with BC from what I recall. The airport might have more bilingual singage but that's about the extent of it.

Well, some people believe in paying taxes to help the less fortunate or less able in a given society, while others resent having to pay for anyone outside their own circle. In the U.S. California has seen several referendums on this type of issue. I happened to visit a family-practice doctor relative there some yrs back while the state was facing a referendum on denying ER treatment to "illegals". My relative was furious at the prospect of someone with undiagnosed drug-resistent TB, for example, being turned away from an ER for lacking documentation. Then they would be spreading the bacteria all around because taxpayers thought it preferable NOT to treat them unless they could pay up themselves on-the-spot. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

pb4-- both my grandfathers came to the U.S. in 1890s as so-called "sojourners". They were in demand at the time due to a need for laborers in the steel industry & coal mines, especially. The govt expected them to work for a few yrs & then repatriate to Hungary, Slovakia, wherever! My maternal grandfather actually did go back to Hungary briefly, but he had been cellarmaster in a winery & the grape crop practically got wiped out by fungus that yr so he was hard up to find work on his return. Then he decided to immigrate to the U.S. & bring his wife, too. It was a good decision on his part because World War I & its aftermath turned the U.S. even more restrictive toward entry of East Europeans, which lasted into the 1950s. Some of my Hungary-born relatives drafted into the U.S. army in 1917 had to sign documents renouncing allegiance to Franz Josef I and affirming that they were not polygamists!!!!!! / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

He was an Hungarian immigrant in Montreal and turned out to be one of the best canadian photographer ever!

Very cool family history Old Hat!!

Haven't heard of him tournevice...my dad was very much into photography...too bad he didn't make a living from it. I have pics of myself sitting on the potty when I was a toddler...lol, you certainly didn't want him to catch you picking your nose or he'd snap a shot of that too and adore it LOL!

Buna, Somedude. I had neighbors who immigrated from Timisoara (Temesvar) to the U.S. They spoke Hungarian & Romanian interchangeably, which always fascinated me. Usually the husband would speak Hungarian to his wife & she would answer him in Romanian. But when she found out that other people spoke Hungarian, she would speak Hungarian to them. RE Hungarian photographers: there are several famous ones, such as Andre Kertesz, Robert Capa, Munkacsi (fashion) who came to the U.S., & Kata Kalman, who was documenting social conditions in 1920s-1930s Hungary. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

We were in Quebec last week. I butchered the language!!
I don't have a problem with bilingual signs but I do have a problem with them being bilingual everywhere except Quebec.
We went to a hydro dam and all signs were in French...at a government run facility!!
We were actually pretty disgusted with this.
