Hi everyone,
Quick question - anyone have their liver enzymes shoot up with 6mp? If so, how high? what did the doc advise? did they go down? If so, how long did it take?

Mine zipped up after my doc tried to increase my dose. My body couldn't handle it. I don't know the counts but after he lowered my dose, he checked it again in 2 weeks and it already went down to normal.

Thanks Sherry. I'm at the end of my sanity rope at the moment and this is the last thing I need. Good to know they went down so fast. Anyone ever have them not go down?

I've had mine go up and they went down as well. 6mp stays in the system for quite some time. When I became neutropenic, it took weeks for my blood counts to get back to normal.

How is your daughter?

I was up to 75 mg of 6mp. My doc told me casually that liver enzymes went up 3x normal. I don't know how accurate that statement was (he never told me was my numbers were) but it took about 4 weeks until my test showed normal again.

Edit: My Docs are trying Azathioprine now on a really low dose 25mg. The theory is 25mg of azathioprine breaks down into an even lower dose of 6mp. Then my liver might not react so strongly, compared to when I started 6mp at 50mg dose. Haven't has my first blood test yet! very nervous.

     Yes, I was on 50 mgm of 6MP for several years and my bilirubin was always twice the normal limit.  In 2009, my doctor increased my dose to 100mgm shocked !  Not only the liver enzyme level but the pancreatic enzyme levels shot up to over 4x normal limits.  I felt HORRIBLE!  When the doctor received the results, he immediately took me off the drug for two weeks.  They then returned to normal and he placed me back on 50 mgm.  Long story short, it didn't keep me in remission.  Tried Remicade and then Humira...nada.  Had surgery in 2010.

wow christine, I'm surprised he put you back on it after such a bad reaction.
nssg, well, her liver enzymes are truly sky high so that's it for 6mp. i regret trying it. just praying they come down.

i was on 6mp at 50 mg and mine went up really high, too. unfortunately, my doctors never monitored my bloodwork after the initial lab work every 2 weeks and 7 months in, i mentioned that i hadn't had bloodwork in over 4 months. when i got it, my doctor immediately took me off 6mp.

now, i am at a new office and have started 6mp at 25 mg. i just got my first round of bloodwork yesterday after being on it for over a month. i'll know by the end of the week if it's crappy or not.

     Killcolitis....I believe the enzyme levels do go down when off the drug.  With me, it was only two weeks.  The GI doctor placed me back down to 50 mgm.  I guess he thought twice the normal bilirubin limits wasn't TOO bad.  However, when he saw the 4x normal limits on the pancreatic enzymes he must have pooped himself.  (hope he did)  I often think to myself....."so glad to be alive!"  In addition to the increased bilirubin and pancreatic enzyme levels, the prednisone was playing havoc with my blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Bloodwork today shows that they are coming down but still very high (AST was over 8 times the limit!) one week after stopping the 6mp. For those whose increased, how long did it take to return to normal. I'm happy they're coming down still another thing to worry about.. bilirubin is normal.

Gamer_girl, Just read your post. Thanks for the info. My daughter had an allergic reaction to a very low dose of imuran. 6MP was our second try. Her body just can't cope with these meds. hopefully imuran will work for you.

I have heard milkthistle can help liver. Maybe worth researching. Hope u get back to "normal" soon.
