I tried gum and patches with no success. I have to wonder if the study PB4 cites isn't correct in my case. I've had one mini-flare in about
2 1/2 years sice I started smoking again.

Here's an interesting study about
Carbon Monoxide and IBD from the Journal of Experimental Medicine:

I've seen that. Published seven years ago. You'd think they'd look for a more healthy way to get the CO into our system. Still waiting.....

I don't want to get into the CO/nicotine controversy as each of us is different; I can only relate my own experience. I was in a very stubborn flare and taking 60 mg/day of prednisone for months with no relief. After seeing some of the research on nicotine as a treatment for UC (they used patches in the study) I decided to try the lozenges. I was feeling better within 48 hours and in full remission in about
a week.
A couple of months after that I discovered e-cigarettes and began using them with occasional supplements of lozenges for those times when sucking on an e-cig is just not PC. I have now been in remission for more than three years. I am taking a large dose of generic Colozol, but I’m convinced that it is the nicotine that is keeping me in remission. I mentioned this to my GI during my last visit and he just smiled.
