My GI wanted me to do 14 days on Priolosec to see if that helped. It was great while I was on it and the day I stopped taking it the reflux came back. Today I talked to his nurse and they okayed taking the Priolosec OTC everday....2x a day if I need it. AAAGGGHHHH!!! I feel like there is a fire burning in my chest. Okay had to vent.

I have taken Rabeprazole which is a similar drug (proton-pump inhibitor) for several years, I learnt a long time ago not to miss any because like you have mentioned miss one dose and it comes straight back :-) Miss more than one dose and take it from me you can end up with very nasty pain :-( On the bright side, if you don't miss any you should be symptom free, at least I am with Rabeprazole so if you don't see any quick response I would highly reccomend Rabepazole.

I tried stopping Prilosec too and the pain didn't come back right away. It waited about a week and then came the painful lump and then the burn. Now I take Prilosec everyday. Do you happen to know if there is any downside to taking Prilosec every day long term?

You could try zantac 150mg twice daily. The other one that works good for me is pariet...but by prescription.

Proton pump inhibitors have a rebound effect when stopped, if you can manage on Zantac or similar stay away from inhibitors.. They keep you dependent.. Try DGL licorice. I'm on the nexium merry go round now.. No sign of reflux, yet if I stop the nexium it's worse than it ever was.. Your meant to wean off and even then it's a challenge, most people stay dependent.. Dont ask a dr though, they wouldn't have a clue.. Lol most don't even know about the rebound and how severe it can be

You can try a table spoon once or twice a day of fresh ginger juice,it seemed to help when I had the
problem. Your reflux might be due to the meds. The ginger juice is really strong,dilute with some water.

Slippery elm powder is helps alot too. Put a teaspoon in a little water, and drink it down , 3 x per day.

Long term prilosec use can lead to your body stopping the production of HCL, and also B12 production.

Is this something that just sprang up? If so, maybe you can try and figure out why it happened and formulate a game plan. I took generic prilosec once a day for years. Anytime I quit I started having problems again. I just recently switched to Pepcid complete due to the fact that prilosec gives you a 3 times higher rate of getting C-Diff. Pepcid only gives you 2 times a higher rate. All antacid type things increase your C-Diff chances.

long term ppi use can also reduce your calcium absorption, so take a calcium supplement while you're taking these drugs, esp if female.

You do need to wean off these meds if you want to stop. I took nexium for years, then prevacid and then I weaned off and I've been fine. I had a gastritis episode this summer that resolved after about a week on prevacid.

Braggs apple cider vinegar (one tablespoon) works every time! Alot of time the doctors feel acid reflux is caused by TOO much acid when it's that you don't have enough. I know that sounds crazy right? I learned from a NP that taking prescription pills messes with you PH levels. What also helped me was Candida Freedom and Candida Digest they have worked wonders for me.

DGL try it as it works wonders for that. It is the natural alternative to antacids. I used it and it worked great when I had issues but no longer have issues.

If you don't want to go the drug way you can mix 1/2 glass of warm water and a large teaspoon of baking soda. It is not pretty but it does help so does ginger. I drink dark ginger ale organic of course, when nothing else works. I have been on losec for many many years. I come off it once in a while but have to go back after a few week. I dont mind taking it though.
