Livers are over-rated...

After months on 6MP and finally tapering off Prednisone, my UC symptoms were mostly all gone. The only issues remaining were fatigue and muscle/joint pain. Then I get a call from my GI's office that bloodwork done at my regular doctor a few days before show elevated enzyme levels in my liver, and that I am to stop taking the 6MP immediately and to start 20 mg of Prednisone for one week. I am scheduled to visit the GI next Thursday. Good news is that after just 3 days of the Prednisone, almost all my aches and pain and fatigue are gone (too bad it's not sustainable). Bad news is I kinda doubt my more serious UC symptoms won't return soon as the 6MP wears off and that my GI appointment on Thursday will be depressing. What can you do?

Forgot to mention that my blood sugar numbers (type 2 diabetes) went from fairly decent to sky high after just one day of the Prednisone. Am attempting a liquid fast today. Just got to work after a Veteren's Day ceremony...I felt guilty- while most people were concentrating on the ceremony, my focus was on the smell of hamburgers cooking on a nearby grill...I am a bad man...

Similar thing happened to me. Sometimes it feels like we just can't catch a break. In my case, I didn't have to take pred but I did stop 6mp for a while until my numbers when back to normal. When things adjusted, I started on a low dose of allopurinol along with a low dose of 6mp and the toxicity to my liver went way down and my theraputic benefit from 6mp went WAY up. This was great because my UC was perfectly controlled. The problem was, after a month or so, I became neutropenic. THis is a known side effect of being above the theraputic range of 6mp. Over time I stopped 6mp, stayed on a low dose and things have been great. I guess you just have to be patient and work through it and you will get to where you need to be.
