Remicade and Sulfasalazine

Hi,

Are any of you on this combo? 

I was on sulfasalazine years ago and it worked great.  I went off sulfasalzine because of its effect on sperm.  Now I am thinking of going back on it (currently on Lialda) while I am on remicade.

My previous dr years ago said that he likes to have people on the two because sulfasalazine helps to prevent antibodies to the remicade (he may have been referring to treating RA and not UC).  I know that 6-mp/imuran is usually the drug of choice for this reason, but have any of you heard the same for sulfasalazine?

I'm sure others will chime in but I don't understand being on combinations like this at all. Sometimes it's a black and white world to me. Either Remicade works or it doesn't. If it is working why would you need something else? Oh yeah. You said something about preventing antibodies to the Remicade. Well I really don't know to be honest but somehow that just does not sound right. I have never heard that before. How have you been doing, UC wise from the Remicade? If it were me, and sulfasalazine worked well on you before and you are now ok with taking it again, I would be tempted to switch back to that and dump the Remicade with all of it's side effects. Then you wouldn't have to worry about those nasty antibodies anymore.

I wish I did not have to consider taking more than 1 medication. I am one of those lucky people who has more than one autoimmune conditions to deal with. Besides my UC I also got spondylitis to deal with. Remicade is treating both. I had a very nasty UC flare this past summer and remicade was the only thing that got me to a good place. My goal is to get into a good remission and then evaluate any possibility of easing off medications. I think I need to be more patient with remicade.

I was just wondering if anyone had heard of any benefit of adding sulfasalazine to remicade.

I guess nobody else chimed in. I really never have heard of that before and it just does not sound right. As far as I know sulfasalazine has absolutely nothing to do with preventing antibodies to Remicade. However, since you took the med before and it helped with side effects not being an issue I see no reason not to do it. It may help improve your condition but as far as preventing antibodies from being formed against the Remicade I would not bet the farm on it.

I am currently on both have tried almost everything else out there. I have Crohn's and A.S. really bad. hopeong this will help me. what ever you do do noit stop the remicaid unlike the sulfsalazine you rbody will become immue to it so be careful.
