How great would it be if this were a law? Ally's Law needs more signature's!

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Enact the Restroom Access Act, or Ally's Law
Enact the Restroom Access Act nationwide. This law would require businesses to allow customers with medically documented illnesses to use bathrooms normally restricted to paying customers or employees.

People with digestive disorders such as IBD, Crones Disease or Ulcerative Colitis; and other medical conditions, shouldn’t be denied access to use a bathroom when they can’t afford to wait or seek alternatives.

I also propose allowing people with these conditions to apply and receive handicap-parking permits. A handicap-parking card will allow people with the disability quicker access to a business to find a bathroom.

Failure to provide this easy access to available bathrooms will discourage many people with these conditions to avoid the particular business, or going out in general.

I agree with this totally. I was shopping in Verizon buying a new cell phone when I became extremely Ill. I asked the manager if I could use the restroom and he said it was restricted. I had to walk 3 stores down. My face must of been priceless I leaned over and quietly said " I have UC" the man quickly opened the door where I sprinted and barely made it. Having UC for 4 years I know the pain of missing the bathroom and being embarrassed in public. Its sonetimes crippling from pain and mentally it detached you from life and living normal is no more..you live by knowing where every bathroom is. Knowing what time you ate and how long before you need a bathroom. Life becomes a toilet. If a law was passed. My life would become a little better:)

Actually this law has already been passed in several states, including my own: Michigan. But if it hasn't passed in your state yet, please by all means contact your representative.

I vote nay. First, how do businesses know that you have a medically documented illness? Are you going to have to carry a bathroom access license in your wallet? Second, I think the vast majority of shop owners will allow you to use private bathrooms if you say "I am sick and it is an emergency". Granted I've only had to do it a few times but there was never a problem. Am I wrong? Pass this law though, and store owners will be more likely to feel hostile and imposed upon rather than sympathetic as they usually do now, and would demand to see your papers and give you a hard time (basically this law would take away their opportunity to be a good person). People don't like being told what to do by law, even when it's something they would have done anyway.

I don't think I agree with the handicap parking bit. They already issues those much too easily.

Maybe restroom access...but I worry that asks for a new wave of accessibility suits for employee-only restrooms that haven't been upgraded yet to be totally ADA compliant.

Even when my flare was the worst, I never had a problem finding a bathroom. Maybe its the town I live in (even businesses with restricted restrooms will let you in if you tell them you're sick) or maybe I just never went anywhere I didn't know I would have access to a bathroom.

Except, of course, my own house. We only have 1 bathroom, and I swear I can hit the door, say "I need the bathroom!" and before I can get my shoes on he is in there. I don't get it. He gets home 2 HOURS before I do...and he is ALWAYS in the bathroom when I need it. I've explained that UC is a "please provide clear access to the bathroom" kind of problem, but he just isn't processing it.

I have a small business and I always let customers use it (not someone who I've never seen who just came in off the street), but it always amazes me how some people leave it. If anyone age 10 or under actually flushes it shocks me! I always wonder if they do this at home!!
