Never take Vibramycin (doxycycline) antibiotic! extremely dangerous for UC patients

Hi just wanted to share with everyone that Vibramycin antibiotic (doxycycline) caused me one of my worst flare ups that is still (after 4 months) out of control. If you are an UC patient DO NOT take this medicine, you will regret this for a life time...
It was prescribed by my dermatologists, in order to solve the problem with my facial skin problem. In two days I had the worst flare up, which is not controllable even with 32 mg of cortisone.

Interesting. I was on Doxy to treat a bout of Lymes disease some years back and while I was on it my UC symptoms improved greatly. I wanted to stay on it because it helped my UC so much but my doctor wouldn't go for it. As soon as I stopped the Doxy, I flared worse than ever.

Hope you can get your flare under control soon.

Many antibiotics cause flares. Many antibiotics help flares. It depends on the root cause of your individual case of UC and the doctors are the first to tell you that they don't know the cause of your UC. Just like many treatments, both meds and natural, what works or doesn't work in one can have the opposite effect in someone else.

@ByeByeUC: thanks for sharing your experience. Good to know that at least this antibiotic made you feel better... I have talked to other UC patients who had a similar experience with me with Doxy and I thought that if this is the case maybe people should know! At least in my case it proved to be a disaster. I am still struggling with the flare and my only available choice is to start with biological therapy.

I have a feeling that it is the doctors who said that your only available choice is biologics. There are many, many choices.

And many of us never had a flare induced by antibiotics. This is what makes UC so freaking complicated; triggers are different, some remedies work for some, not for others, no two flares are alike. It's confounding. I also agree with Gary, there are a lot more treatment options available to you before you jump to biologics.

Thank you all for your answers! I am new to the forum and it is a great relief to share my thoughts and concerns with people who can actually understand of what I am going through...
Concerning the issue discussed, my doctor said that basically we have some "stages" of medicines... the first stage is Salofalk and similar med (pills, enema, etc), the second stage is Imuran and other immunosuppressive med in combination with cortisone during flares, the third stage is the biological therapies and the last stage if nothing else works is the surgery. I have already tried the first two "stages" (which some of them worked for a period of time but nothing seems to work now).
I am really interested to listen to any other available options that I have before jumping to biological therapies, this is something that I really want to avoid... I feel that I am getting closer and closer to the surgery stage and this is causing me great anxiety...

There are many natural things you can do which actually can be quite effective, including bringing on remission. Have you tried probiotics, natural supplements, or diet changes?

I tried probiotics, diet, ginger tea, etc.. I was informed about a very useful link in the resources section of this forum, so my intention is to try the remaining therapies and try my luck with those... Thank you all for your help.
