I know Canadiens have a hard time getting VSL. Hopefully you can. VSL is like 100 times better than Align because VSL has several different strains of probiotics, proven to be beneficial to those with UC and has 450 to 900 billion cultures whereas Align only has probably around 5 billion. Mutaflor is a probiotic that is available in Canada and has had some proven success with UC. You may want to check into that. I don't know if it needs a prescription or not. Align is actually not a bad choice because, even though it only contains one strain, it is one of the most beneficial strains for those with severe digestive issues. If that is the route you wind up going I would do it now, not wait until your daugther is in remission. That leaves the door open to dangerous drugs first without even trying the less dangerous things beforehand. The only bad thing with Align is that the culture count is so low it's probably like a drop in the bucket for what is really needed. I would calculate to take enough where your daughter would be taking enough pills to ad up to at least 50 billion cultures per day, which is actually a pretty small dose for those with UC. I would definetly try some things like turmeric (or curcumin), probiotics, and diet changes first before letting the doctor order dangerous drugs. You might be very surpised at how much some of these things can help. Check into anti-inflammtory diets.
