Really Need Some Advil....

I haven't taken Advil in over a year, and really can't find any good pain relief.  Right now for everyday pain I'm taking Tylenol and if things are really bad a Tramadol. 

Is anyone successfully using Advil?  I only stopped taking it bc I was told to, not bc I noticed problems from it.  I am not currently bleeding, but am still have other flare symptoms.  My period cramps/TMJ are horrible and I am not able to function on just Tylenol and Tramadol.  I really don't think I could function on a strong pain medication though.

I would really like to start taking Advil again...

If you're not flaring, occasional NSAIDs shouldn't be too much of an issue. But you need to be careful because they can promote intestinal bleeding and/or bring on a flare. At one time I was on Celebrex and I seemed to handle it ok, but I didn't use it everyday.

I have taken 800 ibuprofen since day one of my diagnosis and never had any bad side effects... it is the only thing that does help with my stomach cramps and lower back discomfort. My doctor prescribes it to me and tells me to take as needed..

Poor you, with all this pain.

Just my own experience, but when I went real food/ low carb (and I'm not saying you should, it's just my experience), my awful period symptoms dramatically reduced. I also stopped using disposable pads and tampons, when to a product called a Diva Cup and lunapads. While I was in the hospital last week and had to use disposable tampons for my cylcle and diaper-y pads for my D, they actually hurt.

The low carb thing worked for me,I think because I basically stopped eating processed food (incidentally includes wheat and other grains). My health improved for a long time, but then I developed this UC crap. In hindsight, since it was apparent that I had a problem with a whole food group - namely starchy carbohydrates, I shouldn't have just limited/eliminated them, I should have figured out why and how they were causing me problems.

Problem is, I'm no freaking scientific genius. I'm learning now but have no idea if it's going to do me any good.

Sorry for my long surmising which sounds like it's got nothing to do with your Advil question, but what I'm trying to say is that period pain is a symptom that something is wrong, and you should try (at least make an attempt) to find out what the problem is instead of letting the process continue and covering it up with Advil.

Advil should just be a temporary fix and I think you should use it if it helps your pain but I'd encourage you to figure out why it's happening.

For period cramps, ibuprophen is the only med that worked. The other option for you is Naproxin (Aleve).
That might be less problematic, but you'd have to try it.
I cannot take naproxin becase it affects my asthma pretty quickly. But it did help with my period cramping.

Advil usually not recommend with UC since it has anti-inflammatory properties which messes with our inflammation and stuff.

I take Ibuprofen when I have a bad headache (tylenol does nothing for me) and for period cramps. Nothing helps. I don't think I would want to be taking it daily and I wouldn't if I was flaring. But its never caused me to start flaring.

I think I may try taking some the next time I really need it and see how it goes. I'm glad to see others are able to handle it.

I take aleve in a pinch if I have a migraine or if I have really bad joint pain. I made a terrible error last spring, though, and took two doses back-to-back. It ended up giving me terrible gastritis that turned into a mini-flare. I was only having stomach and bowel pain for a week, but I still regret taking that 2nd dose. It wasn't worth it (I was achy after preparing and serving a meal for 25 people). Next time I will get more help in the meal prep and serving, and I will insist on more rest for myself after the event so I don't need to rely on an NSAID.

You might find that experimenting with your diet will help with menstrual cramps a lot. For me, caffeine was a critical part of my problem - if I completely eliminated caffeine I had much much less premenstrual bloat. Ultimately I decided that I really did need chocolate more than I wanted to avoid that bloat, so I continued to drink my 1 glass of tea every day and eat my 2 chocolates. YMMV.

Check out Nabumetone (Ralefan), new class of NSAID, have been using it for a year, once a week, so far so good.

Advil and Alleve puts me in flare within 3 hours.
