I really, really, really wished could take an occasional dose right about now! I have a mild bunion (having surgery for it on the 23rd), but that's been affecting my walking gait a bit. Enough to throw my Sacoiilitis into a flare from hell. Walking hurts and bending over is nearly impossible. Sitting is fine after I first sit down because when I first sit it hurts like crazy.

I have a stomach ulcer, it was bleeding but my GI told me to stay away from all aspirin and NSAIDs until it heals (I'm on two Prilosec a day now).

So I'm throwing a bit of a pity party here.....anyone want some whyme cake??

Oh Red, could you not even try one? Or is it too risky? Hope your feeling good soon

Marty it's too risky with a bleeding stomach ulcer....it's getting better but I know it's still there. I don't want to rock the boat ya know?

I can call my GI and see what I can take though. If I used narcotics, I need an anti-nausea med too because they make me vomit.

Have you talked about Nabumetone? This is a new class NSAID and does not cause bleeding. I bleed within 3 hours of Advil/Alleve but have been taking Nabumetone at least once a week for almost a year now. So far so good. Have you tested for H. pylori? If you are 2 Prilosec/day, you should take at least 2000mcg of B12. Hope you feel well soon.

How about some ice for that bunion? There was some talk here about using an NSAID gel on the skin that was supposed to be pretty effective. Keep stretching your back, hips and hamstrings!

I've never heard of that Nsaid so I looked it up. I can ask about it. No, I haven't been tested for H.Pylori, but I am seeing my GI next week - I can ask him then. And yep, I'm already on a B-Complex.

Kazbern, is that gel Voltaren? I tried it for my hands - didn't do much good. This was a few years ago. The doctor gave me a sample because my insurance doesn't cover it. I do use ice on my foot on occasion (can't do too long because of my Raynaud's) and I have been icing my lower back/hips.

If you are sensitive to NSAIDs, no matter what dosage form you use, it will be the same 'end-result'. I have tried Diclofenac Potassium gel for migraine and same effect as Advil. Now I don't even touch that stuff.

Those of us who need NSAIDs for various reasons, a good news could be couple of years away. There are 2 molecules in clinical trials at the moment. AFAIK, one from Eli-Lily and another from Glenmark. Both supposedly do not have GI side effects and act with 'precision'.

Sherry, can you ask your doc for a pain med patch? at least for now while your stomach ulcer is healing?

Oh, ditto pain med patches! Do you think something like a Tiger Balm pain patch would help bunion pain? A few weeks ago I pulled some muscles in my ribcage and it was incredibly painful. Since I'm pregnant and have UC, I'm pretty limited on what I can take and Tylenol didn't do much. The Tiger Balm pain patches helped a LOT! They have camphor, menthol, and capsaicin. So I was pretty fragrant, but oh well!

No to Capsacin!! Lol I'm severely allergic to it and cayenne peppers. Ingested orally it kills my stomach. Topically it gives me blisters. But that's a good idea about the pain patch tho - do they bother people that have skin sensitivities to adhesives like found on band aids?

hard to say Sherry....some would, some wouldn't. I'm allergic to some bandaids and tape...even the allergic kind. The estrogen patch I use seems to be fine, but one has to make very sure that the area is perfectly dry.

I don't know what pain meds are available, but definitely talk to the doc and find out, or do a search and then present it to your doc.

Or call your pharmacy and ask what they would suggest so that you can ask your doc.

Hmmm now I'm wondering....since I'm going in for a bunionectomy on the 23rd, I have been a little afraid of the pain meds they are going to give me. I really don't respond well to pain meds so I wonder if the pain patches would be better since it bypasses the gut? Or if I would have the same issues. I know I don't have an issue with IV pain meds other than it lowering my bp, but I don't get nauseous or vomit.

And maybe if the patches don't bother me, I have another solution to pain management for my other issues! :)

But thank you everyone for your suggestions!

You may not need too much pain meds for the bunionectomy.I took a total of 3 percocets for mine. Ask for a nerve block. Lasted almost 24 hours. Use lots of ice. Wasn't as bad as some people say.
For your back use Absorbine. You can get it at a feed and grain store. It's for horses. Works great ,much better for pain then bio freeze . I tell all my clients to use it. Good luck with your operation!

Sherry, did you see my link about the black cherry concentrate? There are some convincing testimonials on there and I'm wondering if it would help sacoiilitis. I know it wouldn't be immediate relief. Hope you feel better.
