Has anyone had a confirmed Acute Intolerance Symptom to Mesalamines?

I'm curious if anyone here had their doctor say after taking a prescribed mesalamine that their symptoms are due to acute intolerance to the drug..

If so, how long did it take for the symptoms to appear? The day after starting the medication, or something like a month or more after? Because I read that it does take several months for mesalamines to start working in the first place.

Docs never told me it but I noticed that within hours of any mesalamine /5 ASA my IBD symptoms all worsen- significantly; all brands, oral and rectal.

Have you tried them when in remission? If so was it the same case? Did you get cramps and such right away?

My Dr. never told me,but 1st time I took orals within hours I had not stop daerrhea for 3 days straight after only one dosing, took it a different brand of 5asa,samething plus fever,mine were immediately symptoms of intolerance which stopped after medicine discontinued.

My daughter's symptoms just got worse instead of better...diarrhea worsened within hours of taking mesalamines...we tried several

we even tried Rowasa enemas and that caused diarrhea very quickly- I only used a 1/4 of the
enema the first time too.

The only symptoms we did have was increased diarrhea and cramping- it was obvious it was from the meds.

What a great question.

For my first go around, it took a couple weeks to get the worsened symptoms from the intolerance.

For my second go around, within a few hours... immediate deep stomach pains, liquid D and lots of it ...

My first go around with 5asa's was about two months before I reacted badly. Doc took me off because my liver enzymes were dangerously elevated. I was having problems with diarrhea, etc but I had attributed it to the UC. Took about a two week break then started back and the asacol and three days later my symptoms were getting a lot worse, more blood, trips to the bathroom. I thought it was the asacol but my GI didn't agree. Stopped the asacol. Took another couple weeks then started another 5asa. Twelve hours later and I was having severe cramping, diarrhea, and blood. GI coming around to the idea of intolerance. One more try with sulfasalazine and three hours later I was in agony on the toilet. GI finally agreed I had an intolerance to mesalamines.

I have an intolerance to mesalamine. I notice the awful symptoms between an hour-24 hours of taking the drug. I ended up in the hospital once due to symptoms such as severe d**, sever vomiting, shakes and fever.

@GidHike- to be honest, I have never tried 5ASA's while in full remission, only while having some degree of symptoms. But the adverse, IBD-symptom-worsening effects were so pronounced that I have never contemplated trying them while in remission.
