Hey All,

I hope everyone is well. I have a chronic cough that has persisted for 1 year and 4 months now. I'm 23. I am very active, and the cough is productive daily. (It is a deep, smoker's cough.) When the cough began I was taking Asacol HD, and I then switched to Apriso with no improvement. I also take Canasa.

I have been searching everywhere for an answer, and I have found studies with pulmonary manifestations in IBD that are quite rare.

Has this happened to ANYONE?? If so, was there anything you could do?? I know this is really out on a limb, but I am feeling so desperate after searching so long. I have gotten chest xrays. I have tried inhaler after inhaler, and I am now taking singulair. I know that discontinuing mesalamine would possibly rid the cough... but I fear the alternative immunosuppressive treatment options and know that my IBD could not go untreated. I also don't think that is a feasible option

i had a really bad cough during my flare last year. it lasted for about 3-4 months. i assumed mine was caused from acid reflux. i still don't know. i asked my GI about it and she just said it was from my weak immune system. it went away when i started the paleo diet. some nights it was so bad that it kept me up more than my bowel movements did. it was just really annoying but not painful at all.

I had a bad cough that lasted almost a year. It would even cause me to lose my voice. I went to an ENT and they found I had acid reflux eating at my esophagus. Started nexium twice a day. It wa gone in two weeks.

Whats you apartment like, moldy, damp? You may not see or feel it but get DampRid and see if its indeed damp. I used to get cough every Nov / Dec, pretty bad, just like you explain. The doctor would treat it with Promethazine+Codeine Syrup and Fluticasone nasal spray. It would take about 3 weeks to get it under control.

This would accompany with UC flare. A friend of mine raised a suspicion of mold and she was right because I used to clean mold every week around the windows. Then got Damprid and viola, the apartment was so humid, although the hygrometer was showing just 45%. Now, I have DampRid at every window, a tiny dehumidifier in bathroom -> mold is gone and no coughing this year.

Your case could be different but an aspect to look into (esp if you like in cold weather with lousy exhaust system in the apartment.)

I had a chronic cough the last six months of life with my colon. I had all the tests and they couldn't determine why I had the cough. My brilliant internist claimed that my cough was a manifestation of my UC. Everyone scoffed at her suggestion but I had my colon removed and my cough was gone. I'm not suggesting this is your problem, but look at your recent UC history. Have you been in a flare for a period of time? Have you struggled with UC recently? If so, you're cough could be a symptom of your UC.

I also had a chronic productive cough for a year. I was put on an inhaler, antibiotics, allergy tests were run... nothing helped. Finally I saw an ENT who did a scope down my nose into my throat and said it was reflux. I took prilosec for about a week and the cough went away. I stopped the prilosec after a few more days and the cough stayed gone.
