NSAIDs for a few days??

Anyone have experience with this? I'm currently in remission (had Fecal transplant Aug 2012). This morning, pulled something in my back trying to pick up DD. I saw a chiro this morning and he suggested NSAIDs for even just a day or so to help relieve the muscle spasm. My GI office said they prefer that I avoid them, but if I must taken them try for no more than 3-5 days.

This back pain is so severe right now. I've never had a muscle spasm like this. Trying to determine if it's worth it to take for even a day or two.

I would not risk it! NSAIDS are a no-no with UC and Crohns.

Actually, I partially blame NSAIDS for the severity of my disease . Before my diagnosis, I was prescribed NSAIDS for a sprained ankle and it caused me much abdominal pain and bleeding! Eventually I made my way to a GI and was diagnosed but I have always wondered if the NSAIDS caused or simply excaberbated my Crohns colitis. Either way, no NSAIDS for me, ever again!

I had to take nsaids for 2 weeks and they didn't bother me, although I only took 200mg 3 times a day. Just take at little as possible and stretch the time out as long as possible for safety but enough to help some.

I took Advil three times because of severe tooth pain. I ended up going into a flare. But I think Advil helped set of my UC in the first place. Before I was dx I was taking more than the recommended daily dosage everyday because I had just had surgery and was trying to get off the pain pills because I was on them for two months. No matter how much pain I am in I will do everything I can not to take NSAIDS ever again.

extra strength tylenol might work, should be fine on the gut

I've taken plenty of ibuprofen with no ill effects. As said above just take the lowest dose possible that will help you for as short a time as possible.

I think like everything else about this disease, we're all different on this. I take an NSAID prescribed by my rheumy daily and have for years. My GI knows this and it has never caused me a problem. I have disabling arthritis and would soon be in a wheelchair without treatment.

That said, others do have increased bleeding with NSAIDS. I'd suggest asking your primary care doctor about a muscle relaxant. When you injure a back muscle, all the hundreds of small muscles in your back tend to go into spasm to protect the spine, resulting in increasing pain and stiffness. A muscle relaxant for a few days can break this chain, and then Tylenol will often be adequate for the pain.

No way, I wouldn't put it in my body. There are some serious side effects not to mention if you have UC forget it. I think some hoth baths and some time taking it easy will do the trick. Also there is alot of good info on tart cherry juice working for pain. I read that eating 10 cherries has the same effect as taking 2 aspirin. I just started drinking cherry juice myself and it seems to help with pain I have in my ankle.

I'd skip the NSAIDs....but you can try Tylenol Back Pain relief for a few days. It does have a muscle relaxant, so just be cautious of that.

I would stay away from NSAIDs.  It is what started my ongoing battle with UC.  Take tylenol instead.  I would never again consume another NSAID, even at a low dose.  Ask for tylenol 3 or tramadol or a muscle relaxer. Anything but an NSAID.

I take them, even though I know they can be bad. Since Remicade they do not affect my gut. I took big doses of Aleve, all summer, because of painful tendonitis affecting my daily games of golf. I use lots of ice too, but Aleve works best.

Sorry about the spasming, I know that is painful! You will never take the ability to pick up something off the floor for granted again!

Whatever you do, use ICE, every hour.

If you HAVE to go that route then Nabumetone 750mg. Works for me, once a week. Other NSAIDs put me in flare but this thing has been good to me so far.
