I hadn't heard of anything like that until last year.
I had been on Asacol for 8 years, since diagnosis in 1999. It helped bring me to my first, and only full, remission. In 2004 I started experiencing a terrible flare. This went away when I switched to sulfasalazine.
Last year I was in pretty good remission and my Dr wanted to switch me to Apriso so my wife and I would have a better chance of conceiving. I immediately went from very basically solid stools to severe, painful, liquid diarrhea, accompanied by night sweats, severe abdominal pain and fever. My Dr at the time was no help so I started checking out the fine print of the med. That was the first time i had heard of "mesalamine induced acute intolerance syndrome."
Anyway, I changed Drs and they agreed that's probably what was going on with the Apriso, but also in 2004.
My understanding, though, was that is pretty rare. If your Dr suggests one, I know there are some much better ones out there than there used to be. Apriso is supposedly one of them and I wish I could do it.
I also don't think that's the same kind of thing as with biologics, though, where a biologic's effectiveness may be reduced, I don't think you'll have your body reject it like the mesalamine. Then again, I don't have a lot I experience with biologics.
Man, sorry for the long post! Especially since it probably didn't have any real answers, just my experience. :)
