Ultimately we have to empower ourselves with exhaustive research so we can rely on our own judgment.
Very true. I was very disappointed with my primary G.I. I complained of loose stools, occassional tummy pains, gurgling and his response was to prescribe entocort. I told him, "how can you be sure that these symptoms are due to intestinal inflammation?". He said that my last c-scope showed mild ulcers on my TI so he thought it was those and I should try steroids "just to see if they help".
I wanted to be sure that the steroids would help before taking them so I pushed him for a fecal calprotectin test. He was almost 100% it would come back with elevated inflammatory markers in the stool. 2 weeks later, the results were normal so he told me my symptoms were IBS.
If I hadn't pushed further and just blindly listened to the doctor, I'd have unnecessarily taken a course of Entocort for nothing. Worse, he told me at the time that he wanted me to first try entocort. If there was no symptom improvement, he would give me prednisolone. If that didn't work, he'd put me on Imuran. All of this based solely on him assuming that my symptoms were caused by the ileitis as opposed to IBS.
I am now very cautious about
just following doctors' orders. From my experience, they really don't care.
